Spokespeople for both NATO and the Department of Defense refuted the claim.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=4289775697745638&amp;set=a.453477378042175\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">image<\/a> making the claim about Naval Station Norfolk and NATO, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/nato-welcome\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">political and military alliance<\/a> consisting of the U.S. and 29 other member nations, contains what appears to be a screen grab of a headline. It also includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NorfolkInternatinalAiport\/photos\/in-a-ceremony-at-orf-today-new-nato-signs-were-unveiled-in-the-arrivals-terminal\/4566894336718418\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a> to another Facebook post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pentagon surrenders Norfolk Naval Base to NATO,\u201d reads the headline inside the image. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2018\/07\/15\/fact-check-nato-defense-spending-34-billion\/\">(RELATED: Have NATO Allies Increased Defense Spending By $34 Billion?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While NATO\u2019s Joint Force Command (JFC) Norfolk did, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2021\/07\/15\/as-nato-command-in-norfolk-reaches-full-standup-milley-warns-of-ongoing-need-for-alliance-to-prevent-great-power-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Defense News<\/a>, become fully operational in mid-July, this headquarters is only one part of the naval complex at Norfolk. There is no indication NATO now controls the entire Naval Station Norfolk, which the U.S. Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnic.navy.mil\/regions\/cnrma\/installations\/ns_norfolk.html#:~:text=Naval%20Station%20Norfolk%20is%20situated,naval%20complex%20in%20the%20world.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">describes<\/a> as the world\u2019s largest naval complex.<\/p>\n<p>Check Your Fact reviewed press releases from the <a href=\"https:\/\/search.usa.gov\/search?query=NATO%20Norfolk&amp;affiliate=defensegov&amp;utf8=%26%23x2713%3B\">Department of Defense<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/search.usa.gov\/search?query=NATO%20Norfolk&amp;affiliate=dod_navy.mil&amp;utf8=%26%23x2713%3B\">Navy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/press_releases.htm?query=NATO+Norfolk&amp;keywordquery=*&amp;date_from=dd.mm.yyyy&amp;date_to=dd.mm.yyyy\">NATO<\/a> and found no mention of the U.S. surrendering the strategic base. Nothing in the blog post substantiates its claim about Naval Station Norfolk being surrendered to NATO.<\/p>\n<p>The link included in the image directs users to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NorfolkInternatinalAiport\/photos\/in-a-ceremony-at-orf-today-new-nato-signs-were-unveiled-in-the-arrivals-terminal\/4566894336718418\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 2020 Facebook post<\/a> shared by the Norfolk International Airport that states in part, \u201cIn a ceremony at ORF today, new NATO signs were unveiled in the Arrivals Terminal noting that Norfolk is NATO\u2019s Home in North America.\u201d ORF is the International Air Transport Association\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/en\/publications\/directories\/code-search\/?airport.search=Norfolk,%20Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three-letter location code<\/a> for the airport.
