It has since spread to other countries, causing some to reinstate restrictions and mask-wearing requirements, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/30\/travel\/europe-delta-covid-restrictions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=949497029230486&amp;set=a.164146441098886&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">meme<\/a> widely shared online alleges there is \u201cno \u2018Delta variant\u2019 test\u201d and questions how people \u201care being diagnosed\u201d with it. While the viral tests that are \u201cused to determine if a person has COVID-19\u201d cannot, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.state.tx.us\/coronavirus\/variant-faqs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Texas Health and Human Services<\/a>, determine what variant an infected person has, scientists can detect and identify variants using a different process. That process is called genomic sequencing, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/variants\/variant-surveillance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScientists use a process called genomic sequencing to decode the genes and learn more about the virus,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/variants\/variant-surveillance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC website<\/a> explains. \u201cGenomic sequencing allows scientists to identify SARS-CoV-2 and monitor how it changes over time into new variants, understand how these changes affect the characteristics of the virus, and use this information to better understand how it might impact health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CDC website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/variants\/cdc-role-surveillance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a> the agency tracks variants via genomic surveillance through several methods, including the National SARS-CoV-2 Strain Surveillance system. The National SARS-CoV-2 Strain Surveillance system \u201cwas scaled-up to process 750 samples per week\u201d in late January, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/variants\/cdc-role-surveillance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>CDC public affairs specialist Jade Fulce told Check Your Fact in an email: \u201cCurrently, all viral diagnostic tests for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, are able to detect every variant of the virus; however, these tests will not be able to tell you which specific variant you (or a patient) might have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo tell which variant might be present in a specimen, scientists must perform genomic sequencing on that specimen,\u201d Fulce said. \u201cAt this time, sequencing is available for surveillance purposes only, not for individual diagnostic purposes.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/07\/13\/fact-check-covid-delta-variant-not-fake-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: No, The COVID-19 Delta Variant Is Not Fake)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Genomic sequencing efforts are \u201cdesigned to identify emerging variants, monitor the spread of these variants, and determine if they might change the effectiveness of testing, treatment, or vaccines,\u201d Fulce also explained.<\/p>\n<p>SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses change over time through mutation, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/variants\/variant.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC<\/a>.
