The Treasury Department is now <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/02\/treasury-department-janet-yellen-debt-ceiling-congress\/\">scrambling to prevent<\/a> the U.S. from defaulting on its debt until around October, when Congress would be expected to raise or suspend the debt ceiling again.<\/p>\n<p>An updated debt ceiling would include all additional borrowing since the 2019 budget deal, and is estimated at around $28.5 trillion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/57371\">according<\/a> to the Congressional Budget Office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans have been pretty clear over the last couple of days that they\u2019re drawing a red line on the debt ceiling in terms of their willingness to negotiate \u2014 to consider a clean debt ceiling increase. But the budget measure \u2014 which would not require a single Republican vote under reconciliation \u2014 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/2021\/07\/12\/democrats-mull-keeping-debt-limit-out-of-budget-reconciliation\/\">not expected to include<\/a> language on raising or suspending the debt ceiling. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/13\/government-deficit-second-largest-us-history\/\">(RELATED:&nbsp;Government Deficit On Pace To Be Second Largest In US History)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A top Democratic lawmaker said the party instead plans to negotiate with Republicans about including the debt ceiling in a short-term funding bill that would avert a potential government shutdown in late September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/08\/04\/debt-limit-congress-502417\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to Politico.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell promised Thursday that Republicans will not support raising the debt ceiling, The Hill <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/566517-mcconnell-gop-will-block-debt-limit-hike-if-democrats-pursue-spending-plans\">reported<\/a>.
