It is the world\u2019s largest hydroelectric facility in terms of electricity production, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/special-topic\/water-science-school\/science\/three-gorges-dam-worlds-largest-hydroelectric-plant?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Geological Survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nizamuddin.saiyed.526\/posts\/580268596691677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aug. 3 Facebook post\u2019s footage<\/a>, a torrent of water spills over the retaining wall of a waterway, carrying away boats and automobiles. The caption reads, \u201cThe Gorges Dam in China was opened due to heavy overflowing. See what happened next.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/03\/27\/fact-check-bull-sharks-dumped-ouachita-river-arkansas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Were Over A Dozen Bull Sharks Accidentally Dumped In The Ouachita River?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The video, however, was not filmed in China or this year. ANN News, a Japanese news outlet, posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4XvFFfgXwnw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">longer version<\/a> of the footage on the outlet\u2019s verified YouTube channel in January 2020. In the title, ANN News reported the video showed the Japanese city of Miyako being struck by a tsunami caused by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/news\/day-2011-japan-earthquake-and-tsunami#:~:text=On%20March%2011%2C%202011%2C%20a,Honshu%20on%20the%20Japan%20Trench.&amp;text=The%202011%20Tohoku%20Earthquake%20and,victims%20who%20were%20never%20recovered.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 11, 2011, Tohoku earthquake<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The magnitude nine earthquake and resulting tsunami killed over 18,000 people and caused the meltdown of three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-56252695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC News<\/a>. The location in Miyako featured in the video can be seen in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/@39.641075,141.9572666,3a,75y,78.78h,82.09t\/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sg86rKI4ZFS6-aOM6Fcn9Hw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Maps street view<\/a> from November 2011, months after the natural disaster.<\/p>\n<p>A review of news articles by Check Your Fact turned up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=three+gorges+dam+flooding+overflow&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=nws&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiKqum0jpryAhUaEVkFHQYBDLgQ_AUoAnoECAEQBA&amp;biw=1486&amp;bih=952&amp;dpr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no credible reports<\/a> of the Three Gorges Dam overflowing and causing massive flooding this summer.
