The flow of guns is \u201cthe foreseeable result of the defendants\u2019 deliberate actions and business practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The lawsuit holds that the manufacturers \u201care conscious of the fact that their products are trafficked and used in illicit activities against the civilian population and authorities of Mexico,\u201d according to a document from the Foreign Ministry, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/the_americas\/mexico-guns-us-lawsuit\/2021\/08\/04\/181fdbaa-f52d-11eb-a636-18cac59a98dc_story.html\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cNonetheless, they continue to prioritize their economic benefit, and use marketing strategies to promote weapons that are ever more lethal, without mechanisms of security or traceability,\u201d the document reportedly added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese weapons are intimately linked to the violence that Mexico is living through today,\u201d Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/04\/world\/americas\/mexico-lawsuit-gun-companies.html\">said<\/a> at a press conference on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur main goal is that those companies stop doing what they are doing, that this impunity over the illicit trafficking of guns toward our country stops,\u201d Ebrard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mexico-sues-major-gun-makers-in-u-s-court-11628108966\">noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It is reportedly unclear what the Mexican government believes its chances are of winning the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times added:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"16\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><em>Officials from Mexico\u2019s foreign ministry said that the ultimate goal of the suit was getting U.S. gun makers to be more responsible in the sale and marketing of their arms. The suit does not specify how much compensation the government is seeking, but Foreign Ministry officials said they had calculated up to $10 billion in potential damages.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The companies named in the suit are Smith &amp; Wesson; Barrett Firearms Manufacturing; Beretta U.S.A.; Beretta Holding; Century International Arms; Colt\u2019s Manufacturing Company; Glock, Inc.; Glock Ges.m.b.H; Sturm, Ruger &amp; Co.; and Witmer Public Safety Group and Interstate Arms, both gun suppliers.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">President Joe Biden has voiced support for allowing people to sue makers of guns in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In April, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/biden-wants-end-gun-maker-liability-protections-could-sink-industry-n1263556\"><span class=\"s1\">said<\/span><\/a>, \u201cThis is the only outfit that is exempt from being sued. If I get one thing on my list \u2014 (if) the Lord came down and said, \u2018Joe, you get one of these\u2019 \u2014 give me that one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMost people don\u2019t realize, the only industry in America, billion-dollar industry, that can\u2019t be sued, exempt from being sued, are gun manufacturers,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>Per a White House fact sheet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/07\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-initial-actions-to-address-the-gun-violence-public-health-epidemic\/\"><span class=\"s1\">released<\/span><\/a> in April, Biden announced actions that his administration was taking that were meant to address gun violence. He also called on Congress to pass laws that would lower gun violence and get rid of gun makers\u2019 immunity from liability.<\/p>\n<p>The fact sheet reads, in part:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"14\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>President Biden is reiterating his call for Congress to pass legislation to reduce gun violence. Last month, a bipartisan coalition in the House passed two bills to close loopholes in the gun background check system. Congress should close those loopholes and go further, including by closing \u201cboyfriend\u201d and stalking loopholes that currently allow people found by the courts to be abusers to possess firearms, banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, repealing gun manufacturers\u2019 immunity from liability, and investing in evidence-based community violence interventions.
