Defund police almost cost me my race because of an attack ad. Don\u2019t say socialism ever again,\u201d Virginia Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger reportedly said last November. \u201cIf we run this race again, we will get fucking torn apart again in 2022.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nina Turner\u2019s collapse in an Ohio special election Tuesday is the latest in a string of defeats for the left, with Democratic voters repeatedly opting for more moderate candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Turner, a progressive activist and former top aide to Sen. Bernie Sanders, lost her bid to represent a Cleveland seat in Congress to Shontel Brown by about six points. And while she has long been a controversial figure disliked by the Democratic establishment, her fate Tuesday is similar to less controversial progressive candidates across the country whose campaigns have crumbled against more moderate figures.<\/p>\n<p>In a special election in Louisiana in April, now-Rep. Troy Carter easily beat his progressive rival. Terry McAuliffe <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/08\/terry-mcauliffe-glenn-youngkin-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trounced his progressive challengers<\/a> in Virginia\u2019s Democratic gubernatorial primary, winning 62% of the vote. McAuliffe had far greater name recognition and a larger war chest than his rivals, but he also declined to endorse leftist policy goals and <a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/govt-and-politics\/democratic-candidates-for-governor-differ-on-police-reform-in-first-formal-debate\/article_38dd68ce-190e-5d96-9e9f-576930ac8b3a.html\">explicitly opposed<\/a> defunding police departments.<\/p>\n<p>The most striking defeat may have been in New York City, where former NYPD officer Eric Adams campaigned not on defunding the police but on reconnecting officers with the communities they protect and better equipping police departments to do their jobs justly and efficiently. Adams, who was frequently targeted by the Democratic left, beat out the crowded field vying to succeed term-limited Mayor Bill de Blasio, and is <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/06\/eric-adams-kathryn-garcia-new-york-city-mayoral-race-absentee-ballots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all but certain to be elected<\/a> in November. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/13\/eric-adams-joe-biden-new-york-city-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-defund-the-police-progressives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Eric Adams Shows That Progressives Dominate The Dialogue, Only To Lose Elections)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The consecutive progressive defeats come less than a year after the 2020 election, where former President Donald Trump outperformed most polls and Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/04\/house-democrats-disaster-election-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unexpectedly gained seats<\/a> in the House even as President Joe Biden won on a platform of bipartisanship \u2014 not Medicare-for-All, defunding the police or embracing \u201csocialism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite their recent electoral struggles, progressives have scored some big victories. In May, Philadelphia <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/19\/surge-violent-crime-progressives-win-big-philadelphia-pittsburgh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reelected progressive District Attorney Larry Krasner<\/a> as Pittsburgh simultaneously ousted its incumbent Democratic mayor for a more progressive alternative.<\/p>\n<p>A similar scene unfolded in Buffalo, New York, where self-described socialist India Walton <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/23\/socialist-on-track-buffalo-mayor-defeating-democratic-incumbent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">successfully challenged Byron Brown<\/a>, the city\u2019s establishment mayor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the work of a well-meaning group of rebels and revolutionaries that had a bold vision on what we want the future of our city to look like,\u201d Walton told her supporters on June 23, when it was clear she was on track to win. \u201cAll that we are doing in this moment is claiming what is rightfully ours. We are the workers. We do the work. (Spencer Platt\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But many, including congressional Democrats, blamed their party\u2019s losses to Republicans last November on progressive rhetoric that drove swing voters and voters of color away. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/20\/socialism-medicare-for-all-florida-latinos-vote-republican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Fear Of Socialism May Have Driven Florida Latinos To Vote Republican, Former State Rep Says)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>California Democratic Rep. Tony C\u00e1rdenas said in February that Democrats needed to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/24\/california-democrat-partys-message-change-overnight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">change their message<\/a> \u201covernight\u201d and become more \u201cculturally competent\u201d if they wanted to be successful in future elections, noting his party\u2019s implosion among Latino voters last November.<\/p>\n<p>Other Democratic lawmakers, some of whom barely survived in their swing districts despite their own personal moderate messaging, were more pointed in their remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanna be frank that we have a problem, especially in places like Michigan where people don\u2019t know what it means to be a Democrat,\u201d Michigan Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/11\/brand-weak-democrat-elissa-slotkin-problems-message\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said in November<\/a>. \u201cThe brand has been weak for a while \u2026 So, while I don\u2019t love some of the slogans, I don\u2019t love a lot of what I\u2019m hearing from some of my colleagues who are further left of me, I think that we have a bigger strategic problem and we need to own that as Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just days earlier, Virginia Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who like Slotkin barely fended off a Republican challenge in her own Richmond-area district, gave a stark assessment of what she thought went wrong. \u201cWe lost races we shouldn\u2019t have lost.
