Democrats in Congress had <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/05\/10\/house-subpoena-trump-tax-returns\/\">initially tried to obtain<\/a> Trump\u2019s tax returns in 2019 by subpoenaing former Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and former IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s Justice Department at the time argued that the Committee failed to \u201cdemonstrate a legitimate legislative purpose\u201d for obtaining the tax information, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/565652-justice-dept-says-trumps-tax-returns-should-be-released\">according<\/a> to The Hill.
