Bernie Sanders and an outspoken progressive activist, suffered a stunning loss Tuesday in her bid to represent Ohio\u2019s 11th Congressional District to Shontel Brown, who was backed by the moderate wing of the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>Turner entered the race in December with the highest profile and became the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/15\/nina-turner-announces-ohio-congressional-bid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">immediate frontrunner<\/a>, and had the support of well-known figures on the left including Sanders, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of the \u201cSquad.\u201d But Brown, the chair of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, surged in the final weeks before the special election\u2019s primary, securing major endorsements from the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/08\/congressional-black-caucus-hillary-clintons-ohio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Congressional Black Caucus<\/a> and figures like Hillary Clinton and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/30\/jim-clyburn-shontel-brown-nina-turner-bernie-sanders-ohio-special-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn<\/a>, and polls subsequently <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/15\/poll-ohio-nina-turner-shontel-brown-tied\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">showed the race tightening<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brown led Turner 50.1% to 44.4% when the latter conceded the race just after 10 p.m.: \u201cThis campaign on this night, we will not cross the river,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allymutnick\/status\/1422741544449236999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Turner\u2019s loss mirrors recent progressive defeats in congressional and municipal races across the country.<\/p>\n<p>In special elections in Louisiana and New Mexico earlier this year, low-profile moderates trounced both their progressive challengers and Republican opponents alike. In New York City, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/06\/eric-adams-kathryn-garcia-new-york-city-mayoral-race-absentee-ballots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all but certain to become mayor<\/a> after campaigning on a platform of fighting violent crime and reconnecting police officers with the communities they serve instead of defunding them like some progressives have championed. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/13\/eric-adams-joe-biden-new-york-city-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-defund-the-police-progressives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Eric Adams Shows That Progressives Dominate The Dialogue Only To Lose Elections)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Her loss also comes amid heightened tensions between moderate Democrats and those on the left. Clyburn said his decision, in part, to endorse Brown came after his opposition to progressive rhetoric like \u201cdefund the police,\u201d warning that it could damage Democrats\u2019 standing in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I try to do is demonstrate by precept and example how we are to proceed as a party,\u201d Clyburn said. \u201cWhen I spoke out against sloganeering, like \u2018Burn, baby, burn\u2019 in the 1960s and \u2018defund the police,\u2019 which I think is cutting the throats of the party, I know exactly where my constituents are. Santiago\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Progressives in Congress, including Sanders, have also been skeptical of the bipartisan infrastructure bill being debated in the Senate, with some hinging their support for it on Democrats\u2019 proposed $3.5 trillion reconciliation package that funds priorities from climate change to child care and Medicare expansions.<\/p>\n<p>Turner herself has frustrated moderate Democrats in the past. In addition to her outspoken support for Medicare-for-All and \u201cdefund the police,\u201d she also <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/07\/27\/bernie-campaign-co-chair-voting-for-biden-eating-bowl-of-shit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">likened voting for President Joe Biden<\/a> to eating \u201ca bowl of shit,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/07\/27\/bernie-campaign-co-chair-voting-for-biden-eating-bowl-of-shit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> that he has \u201crepeatedly betrayed black voters\u201d during the 2020 Democratic primaries.<\/p>\n<p>Another special election occurred in Ohio\u2019s exurban Columbus 15th Congressional District to succeed former Republican Rep. Steve Stivers, who resigned in April. Coal lobbyist Mike Carey, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, cruised to victory with a 36% of the vote, beating the closest two challengers by over 20 points.<\/p>\n<p>The election in the 11th district was to succeed former Rep. Marcia Fudge, who resigned to become Biden\u2019s secretary of Housing and Urban Development.<\/p>\n<p>Both Brown and Carey are both extremely likely to win their general elections in November given their districts\u2019 sharp liberal and conservative leanings, respectively.
