Authorities have also ordered mass testing in the city of 11 million, where the virus was first detected before it spread around the world,\u201d NPR&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2021\/08\/03\/1024152774\/panic-buying-and-transport-lockdowns-in-wuhan-it-feels-like-early-pandemic-again\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The lockdowns and testing are measures being taken after cases were identified last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">State media People\u2019s Daily <a href=\"http:\/\/en.people.cn\/n3\/2021\/0803\/c90000-9879453.html\">reported<\/a> that \u201cChina has reported a cluster of COVID-19 infections in the past month, with 328 new locally transmitted confirmed cases registered in July, a number almost equal to the country\u2019s total number in the previous five months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViral genome sequencing found all the strains to be the highly infectious Delta variant and cities hit by the recent resurgence have promptly taken action to curb the spread of the coronavirus,\u201d the outlet added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/china-millions-lockdown-biggest-outbreak-coronavirus\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> on Monday, \u201cInitial reports from last week noted that the variant had spread to 15 cities, but that number had risen to 20 cities by Monday. The latest outbreak started July 20 with the variant detected on a plane that arrived at Nanjing Lukou International Airport during a routine cleaning.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAfter their work was complete, due to cleaning and protective measures not meeting standards, it\u2019s possible some staffers got infected, causing the virus to spread among cleaning staff,\u201d Ding Jie, deputy director general at the Nanjing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/china-millions-lockdown-biggest-outbreak-coronavirus\"><span class=\"s1\">said<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ding added that new cases are \u201cconstantly being discovered,\u201d the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3143071\/nanjing-airport-coronavirus-cluster-spreads-15-other-chinese?module=perpetual_scroll&amp;pgtype=article&amp;campaign=3143071\"><span class=\"s2\">South China Morning Post reported<\/span><\/a>, per Fox News.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Travel has been heavily impacted by the shutdowns, as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe capital city has cut all rail, bus and air links with areas where coronavirus cases have been found, and closed its doors to tourists during the peak summer holiday travel season,\u201d The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/aug\/02\/millions-under-strict-lockdown-china-covid-outbreak\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> on Monday. \u201cOnly \u2018essential travellers\u2019 are allowed to enter, if they have a negative nucleic acid test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On Sunday, city authorities called on people not to depart Beijing \u201cunless necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The news out of China comes as Americans are closely watching what steps the U.S. government might take following a rise in cases that is reportedly largely due to the delta variant of the coronavirus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K6uI0rr0r1A\"><span class=\"s1\">said<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;President Joe Biden is keeping the option open for the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC) and health officials to make health recommendations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe\u2019re not going back to the shutdowns of March of 2020. We are not going back to the economy shutting down. We\u2019ve made too much progress. Too many people are vaccinated. There\u2019s been too much progress on the economic front,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Psaki added, however, that he has said from the beginning that \u201cwe\u2019re not going to take options off the table\u201d from what the health officials might recommend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Dr. Anthony Fauci&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fauci-says-more-pain-and-suffering-to-come\"><span class=\"s1\">said<\/span><\/a> in an interview Sunday that he doesn\u2019t \u201cthink we\u2019re going to see lockdowns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI think we have enough of the percentage of people in the country \u2014 not enough to crush the outbreak \u2014 but I believe enough to allow us to not get into the situation we were in last winter. But things are going to get worse.
