Rod Blagojevich has sued the state of Illinois for prohibiting him from running for office, FOX 32 reported Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic governor of Illinois was impeached in January 2009 for corruption. The Illinois State Senate voted to prohibit him from running for statewide office again mere moments after unanimously convicting him, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/POLITICS\/01\/29\/illinois.governor\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat resolution is the handiwork of a rigged impeachment process engineered by Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan,\u201d Blagojevich said outside the courthouse on Monday, where he filed his lawsuit against the ban, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox32chicago.com\/news\/former-illinois-governor-rod-blagojevich-files-lawsuit-demanding-right-to-run-for-office-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FOX 32<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s unconstitutional to pass a law against one person that he or she can\u2019t run for anything,\u201d Blagojevich told <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/rod-blagojevich-illinois-governor-what-is-doing-now-exclusive\/10923509\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABC7<\/a>. \u201cI could legally run for President of the United States, but I can\u2019t run for alderman of the 33rd Ward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He served eight years of a 14-year sentence and was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/02\/22\/rod-blagojevich-political-prisoner-cnn-anderson-cooper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pardoned<\/a> by former President Donald Trump in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, we commuted the sentence of Rod Blagojevich. He served eight years in jail, a long time. He seems like a very nice person, don\u2019t know him,\u201d Trump told reporters at the time. And there\u2019s a good chance my wife Patty is going to watch this and I want to be clear, sweetheart, I\u2019m not thinking about running for anything in particular,\u201d Blagojevich added. \u201cBut I do feel like it\u2019s a violation of not only my right, but the right of the people to elect who they want, to elect, to choose whoever they want to choose. Vote for, vote against whoever they want to vote for or against. It\u2019s a voting rights issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019s got a very hard argument to make,\u201d legal analyst Gil Soffer, a former assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago, told ABC7. \u201cAnd the reason is this: impeachment is not like a criminal proceeding. A criminal proceeding clearly under the Constitution has certain constitutional protections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it is much less clear for an impeachment proceeding.
