I think a lot of people took a deep breath and said, \u2018Oh my God, what does this mean?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New York Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/08\/01\/masking-kids-and-closing-schools-is-irrational-child-abuse\/\">reported<\/a> on Sunday, \u201cA study out of the UK released last week proved \u2014 once again \u2014 what we\u2019ve known for more than a year:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/07\/22\/kids-are-at-low-covid-risk-in-schools-but-masking-could-do-long-term-damage\/\">Kids transmit the coronavirus<\/a>&nbsp;at a much lower rate than do adults. Epidemiologist Shamez Ladhani, who led the study, found that children \u2018aren\u2019t taking [the virus] home and then transferring it to the community. These kids have very little capacity to infect household members.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, The New York Times tweeted, \u201cBreaking News: The Delta variant is as contagious as chickenpox and may be spread by vaccinated people as easily as the unvaccinated, an internal C.D.C. report said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Director of Strategic Communications &amp; Engagement for the White House slammed the Times in all caps on Twitter, acknowledging, \u201cVACCINATED PEOPLE DO NOT TRANSMIT THE VIRUS AT THE SAME RATE AS UNVACCINATED PEOPLE AND IF YOU FAIL TO INCLUDE THAT CONTEXT YOU\u2019RE DOING IT WRONG.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.4788732394366\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">VACCINATED PEOPLE DO NOT TRANSMIT THE VIRUS AT THE SAME RATE AS UNVACCINATED PEOPLE AND IF YOU FAIL TO INCLUDE THAT CONTEXT YOU&#8217;RE DOING IT WRONG. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gBkDbJ21xX\">https:\/\/t.co\/gBkDbJ21xX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ben Wakana (@benwakana46) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benwakana46\/status\/1421182153224818694?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 30, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBut I think the news you showed today from Axios and others that breakthrough cases are still very rare and if you get breakthrough cases when you\u2019re vaccinated you\u2019re not going to get nearly as sick, you\u2019re not gonna die; schools will be open,\u201d Weingarten admitted on CNN. \u201cThey need to be open; we need to make sure that they are safe and healthy. We\u2019ve launched our $5 million campaign to do back to school for all. So let\u2019s just be really clear about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sciutto acknowledged, \u201cThe data is for the vaccinated they\u2019re very safe from hospitalization and death.\u201d He reiterated Weingarten\u2019s claim: \u201cThe reason for masks, right, is the vaccinated can still spread this, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly,\u201d Weingarten responded,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI imagine you see the benefit of students masking going forward as the school year opens,\u201d Sciutto stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly. Exactly,\u201d Weingarten answered. \u2018So that\u2019s why the next question, about will they stay open, that\u2019s where we worry, because when you have lots of kids, particularly every child under 12 has not been vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sciutto, \u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see the Delta variant being very transmissible,\u201d Weingarten said. \u201cAnd so that\u2019s why what masks do, is mask stop transmission. So universal masking is going to be very helpful to keep kids safe. To keep the unvaccinated safe, and to keep schools open. Because you saw from some of your reporting already that you\u2019re already seeing some quarantining in places that thought they were going to open today. So school opening is really important; we need to be in school; we need everybody to be safe; we need to focus on accelerated learning and we need to focus on the emotional and social well-being of kids. So that\u2019s why I come down to where the APA and the CDC recommends, which is, as much as&nbsp; \u2014 I\u2019m asthmatic, I hate these things, but we have to wear them to keep us safe and to keep our kids in schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sciutto seized the opportunity to continue the media\u2019s attacks on DeSantis: \u201cThe vaccination rate among teachers is quite high, I believe your team was telling us about 90%. How are teachers reacting to this, particularly in communities where, a place like Florida, right, where they\u2019re allowing choice, in effect, they\u2019re allowing parents to decide as opposed to school districts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I was in Florida on Saturday, and by the way, Saturday Florida had, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, I don\u2019t remember exactly, it had the highest level of cases of COVID, I think, ever, and so teachers are very scared about this,\u201d Weingarten claimed. \u201cI was with two groups of teachers on Saturday, one in Jacksonville, one in Polk County, again, we\u2019re very serious about reopening schools, safe and welcoming environments for all. All educators want that. But they\u2019re scared that we\u2019re not going to be able to keep everybody safe. And they want us to have masking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What Weingarten and Sciutto ignore is that COVID spreads more successfully when people are inside; in the heat of the Florida summer, more people are inside in the air conditioning. While Weingarten and Sciutto targeted Florida, they ignored the leftist haven California. As The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/01\/us\/covid-santa-monica-icu.html?action=click&amp;module=Spotlight&amp;pgtype=Homepage\">noted<\/a> on Sunday: \u201cCovid-19 is surging once more, at Saint John\u2019s and in the world around it, driven by vaccine resisters and the virus\u2019s hyper-contagious Delta variant. In California, new infections are appearing at a rate <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/us\/california-covid-cases.html\">not seen since February<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.137313432836\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">AFT\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rweingarten?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@rweingarten<\/a> says \u201cuniversal masking\u201d is needed to keep schools open:  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see the Delta variant be very transmissible.
