For one, the Chinese government is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/senate-passes-uyghur-forced-labor-prevention-act\"><span>holding<\/span><\/a><span> members of the Uyghur ethnic minority in concentration camps where they are reportedly sterilized and \u201creeducated\u201d with communist doctrine. For another, the Chinese government recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/citing-ccp-influence-biden-warns-americans-about-doing-business-in-hong-kong\"><span>enacted<\/span><\/a><span> a law which suppresses civil liberties in Hong Kong. Most recently, Chinese President Xi Jinping took an aggressive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chinese-state-media-publishes-three-stage-battle-plan-for-taiwan-invasion-as-president-xi-calls-for-complete-reunification\"><span>posture<\/span><\/a><span> toward the island nation of Taiwan, calling for its \u201ccomplete unification\u201d under the mainland\u2019s hegemony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Now, debate over the appropriate response to these abuses, and whether they should impact America\u2019s participation in the 2022 Games has begun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) \u2014 who helped organize the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.romney.senate.gov\/right-way-boycott-beijing-olympics\"><span>encouraged<\/span><\/a><span> an \u201ceconomic and diplomatic boycott\u201d of the Beijing Games, which would allow American athletes to compete while American tourists and officials largely stay home. The move would be best executed with coordination from American corporations and news outlets \u2014 especially NBC, which broadcasts the Games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, a group representing Uyghurs, Tibetans, and residents of Hong Kong is calling for a complete <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/boycottbeijing2022.net\/\"><span>boycott<\/span><\/a><span> in 2022. They argued that \u201cparticipating in the Beijing Olympic Games at this time would be tantamount to endorsing China\u2019s genocide against the Uyghur people, and legitimizing the increasingly repressive policies of the totalitarian Chinese regime.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What are American officials, athletes, and spectators to do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/global-politics\/report\/us-policy-options-the-2022-beijing-winter-olympics?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=thf-tw\"><span>analysis<\/span><\/a><span> released by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/staff\/olivia-enos\"><span>Olivia Enos<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 a senior policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation\u2019s Asian Studies Center \u2014 American policy options toward Games hosted by repressive regimes have differed over the past century.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Though the United States fully participated in the Berlin Olympics in 1936, for instance, it also enacted a complete boycott of the 1980 Games in Moscow. Though competing in the Nazis\u2019 Games offered \u201cthe impression that the U.S. did not care about the persecution of European Jews,\u201d the boycott of the Soviets\u2019 Games failed to \u201cresult in the desired policy outcome \u2014 the Soviet Union\u2019s withdrawal from Afghanistan \u2014 until 10 years later.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Therefore, Enos argues that the United States should find middle ground.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>First, the United States and other Western allies should push the International Olympic Committee to \u201cpostpone and move\u201d the Beijing Games. According to Enos, \u201cthis would be an opportunity to present a strong, unified, global stand against Beijing\u2019s egregious human rights record,\u201d holding the Chinese Communist Party \u201cresponsible for its violations without punishing athletes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u201cbackup plan\u201d would be a diplomatic boycott similar to the one mentioned by Romney. Facets of the plan include sending \u201conly government officials to the extent necessary to guarantee the safety of athletes participating in the Olympics\u201d while pressing \u201cfor access to political re-education camps in Xinjiang as a precondition to full diplomatic participation,\u201d as well as encouraging athletes to draw attention toward Chinese repression. For instance, the United States delegation could refrain from the traditional flag dip to the host country\u2019s diplomats during the opening ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So far, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2021\/04\/olympics-china-joe-biden-boycott-1234728898\/\"><span>hints<\/span><\/a><span> from the Biden administration about its tactics toward the 2022 Games have varied. State Department Spokesman Ned Price said that his agency would \u201ccertainly wish to discuss\u201d a boycott with international allies; however, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki recently told reporters that such talks would not be held.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Tokyo Olympics \u2014 though underway \u2014 face a host of challenges already.
