Joe Manchin threw cold water on the idea that he might support a one-time suspension of the filibuster to pass voting reform legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin told CNN anchor Jake Tapper that he did not see a path forward for what some advocates are calling a \u201ccarveout\u201d \u2014 a special exception to the 60-vote threshold \u2014 to pass the sweeping overhauls to federal election laws contained in HR-1. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/23\/senate-democrats-filibuster-joe-manchin-cloture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manchin<\/a> has also said several times that he did not support passing HR-1 along party lines, arguing that it would only serve to further divide the country.<strong> <a class=\"text-black\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/22\/chuck-schumer-joe-manchin-senate-voting-rights-bill-mitch-mcconnell\/\">(RELATED: Senate Republicans Employ Filibuster To Tank Democrats\u2019 Sweeping Voting Bill)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not do anything, Jake, to separate our country further,\u201d Manchin began, repeating his position on passing new <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/16\/manchin-meets-republicans-compromise-voting-rights-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">voting rights legislation<\/a> along party lines. He warned that a massive overhaul could run into trouble or even be overturned in court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you want it to be bipartisan,\u201d Tapper replied, adding, \u201cBut I don\u2019t know how possible that is. The only Republican I\u2019ve heard talk about this in a positive way is Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there any circumstance under which you could imagine allowing a carveout for the \u2014 I know you oppose getting rid of the filibuster,\u201d Tapper pressed, pointing out the fact that some had pushed for a one-time suspension of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/23\/bernie-sanders-patience-filibuster-manchin-sinema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filibuster<\/a>. \u201cCan you imagine ever doing that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJake, I can\u2019t imagine a carveout because I was here in 2013,\u201d Manchin said, arguing that history dictated any such move would likely backfire when Republicans were in control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re just going to do the cabinet for the president and then it went into we\u2019re going to do the judges, who were lifetime appointments for circuit and district, and they were even going to do Supreme Court but they didn\u2019t at that time. The Democrats were in control,\u201d Manchin explained.<\/p>\n<p>He also said, \u201cIn 2017 Mitch McConnell\u2019s in control, comes right back in and guess what, that carveout worked to really carve us up pretty bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manchin concluded by saying that ensuring the minority a voice in the Senate forced politicians to work together, and that was a tradition he intended to uphold.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic West Virginia Sen.
