The photo included in the Facebook post was taken in February at the SheBelieves Cup.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tokyo-olympic-games-2020-tokyo-olympics-race-and-ethnicity-sports-3f8d420b7e94bbafa037d22327efb38b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">updated its rules<\/a> to allow athletes to make gestures of protest in limited circumstances, including \u201con the field of play prior to the start of the competition (i.e. after leaving the \u2018call room\u2019 (or similar area) or during the introduction of the individual athlete or team),\u201d according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/ioc\/news\/ioc-extends-opportunities-for-athlete-expression-during-the-olympic-games-tokyo-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IOC press release<\/a>. Such gestures, the IOC <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/ioc\/news\/ioc-extends-opportunities-for-athlete-expression-during-the-olympic-games-tokyo-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>, must not be \u201cdisruptive\u201d or \u201ctargeted, directly or indirectly, against people, countries, organizations and\/or their dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the U.S. women\u2019s team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/soccer\/uswnt-sweden-olympics-soccer-20210721.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 21 loss<\/a> to Sweden in the Games, some social media users started sharing a photo of eight U.S. players kneeling while three stand with their hands over their hearts, claiming it was taken during the national anthem at the Olympics. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dan.rosania.9\/posts\/2344588532339553\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One such post<\/a> reads, \u201cWHEN YOU BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU\u2026 U.S. women\u2019s team kneeling in black lives matter jackets during the national anthem right before the Olympic soccer game; they lost 3-0 to Sweden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the U.S. women\u2019s soccer team did kneel before their game against Sweden, they did not do so during the national anthem. Both the American and Swedish teams knelt before the start of the game while pregame music played in the stadium, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/olympics-soccer-players-kneel-uswnt-090330888.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yahoo! Sports<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/news\/protests-2021-tokyo-olympics-why-rules-changed-t226328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Today<\/a>. All of the U.S. women\u2019s soccer team players stood for the national anthem before the July 21 game, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/olympics-soccer-players-kneel-uswnt-090330888.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yahoo! Sports<\/a> also reported. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/07\/13\/fact-check-media-sponsors-ignore-kim-rhode-pro-second-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Media And Sponsors \u2018Ignore\u2019 Olympian Kim Rhode Because She Is Pro-Second Amendment?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The photo featured in the Facebook post making the misleading claim was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/julie-ertz-lindsey-horan-and-carli-lloyd-of-united-states-news-photo\/1231247362?adppopup=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">actually taken<\/a> back in February at the 2021 SheBelieves Cup in Orlando Florida. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/julie-ertz-lindsey-horan-and-carli-lloyd-of-united-states-news-photo\/1231247362?adppopup=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Getty Images caption<\/a> for the picture reads, \u201cJulie Ertz #8, Lindsey Horan #9 and Carli Lloyd #10 of United States stand during the United States national anthem against Canada during the SheBelieves Cup at Exploria Stadium on February 18, 2021 in Orlando, Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/tokyo-olympics-live-updates\/2021\/07\/21\/1018811516\/players-take-a-knee-at-tokyo-olympics-as-the-first-competitions-kick-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Other women\u2019s soccer teams<\/a> such as New Zealand and Great Britain knelt before their opening matches at the Tokyo Olympics, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/olympics\/female-athletes-grabbing-spotlight-olympics-political-social-demonstrations-n1275222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NBC News<\/a>.
