Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that everyone would have to wear a face mask indoors regardless of vaccination status. Bowser cited a rise in COVID-19 cases and the delta variant as the reason behind the new mandate.<\/p>\n<p>What was odd at the time, however, was that the new mandate didn\u2019t go into effect immediately. If the delta variant was so dangerous, why wait? The new mandate was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/dc-mask-mandate-covid\/2021\/07\/29\/7699c8e0-efe6-11eb-81d2-ffae0f931b8f_story.html\">announced<\/a> Thursday but wouldn\u2019t go into effect until Saturday. Why wait two days for something allegedly so important?<\/p>\n<p>The answer was revealed on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s office released a statement on Friday announcing that comedian Dave Chappelle would be performing in the District this weekend, with his first performance Friday night at The Anthem. Chappelle is headlining the first live public event at the venue since March 2020 and has been branded as the official re-opening of The Anthem.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, Bowser attended the Friday night performance \u2013 the night before the mask mandate went into effect. Masks were required at The Anthem for the show, but the District\u2019s mandate was not in effect, allowing Bowser and Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development John Falcicchio to meet with Chappelle and pose for a photo without wearing masks.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"3.8888888888889\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DCisOpen?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DCisOpen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DaveChappelle?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DaveChappelle<\/a> reopened <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAnthemDC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TheAnthemDC<\/a> on Friday night! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MiDypxUSCC\">pic.twitter.com\/MiDypxUSCC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John J. Falcicchio (@falcicchio) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/falcicchio\/status\/1421323296541392899?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 31, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Falcicchio tweeted the photo Friday night, when just a day earlier he tweeted, \u201cWe\u2019re all in this together, and we\u2019ll get through this together. #MaskUpDC.\u201d Included in the tweet was a photo of the new mask announcement saying, \u201cEffective Saturday, July 31 at 5:00 a.m., all people over the age of two must wear a mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The perceived hypocrisy of Muriel\u2019s mandate vs. her personal behavior is the latest for Democrats, who have pushed mandates on the general public while personally ignoring them. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is one of the biggest offenders, most recently pulling his children out of a summer camp after it was revealed they were not wearing masks despite the governor\u2019s orders for the rest of the state. As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/newsom-pulls-kids-from-camp-after-photos-emerge-of-them-maskless\">reported<\/a>, Newsom\u2019s spokeswoman Erin Mellon claimed the Newsoms merely missed an email from the camp saying that children would not be required to mask.<\/p>\n<p>It was a difficult claim for many to believe, given Newsom\u2019s history of defying his own orders. Last year, Newsom attended a dinner at a ritzy restaurant without following the rules he had imposed on the rest of California, including no masks, and no social distancing while indoors. Further, more people attended the dinner than were allowed at the time. Also at the dinner was two top officials from the California Medical Association.<\/p>\n<p>Bowser herself had previously disregarded her own in-place orders while claiming it was due to \u201cessential\u201d government business. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/2020-democrat-hypocrisy-hall-of-shame\">From The Daily Wire<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Around the same time a D.C. pub frequented by Trump supporters was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonian.com\/2020\/11\/15\/dc-trump-supporter-bar-gets-1000-fine-for-maskless-crowds\/\">fined thousands<\/a>&nbsp;for violating her restrictions, Bowser traveled to celebrate Biden\u2019s apparent victory with a crowd in Wilmington, Delaware, one of the \u201chigh-risk states\u201d from which she normally demands a 14-day quarantine if anyone visits. The mayor\u2019s office assured both&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5dc.com\/news\/dc-mayor-muriel-bowser-trip-to-delaware-for-biden-speech-considered-essential-travel\">Fox 5<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SegravesNBC4\/status\/1325933711259471872\">NBC 4<\/a>&nbsp;that her trip to the Biden victory speech was \u201cessential travel\u201d because she met with senior Biden adviser Symone Sanders in her official capacity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI do a lot of things to advance the interests of the District of Columbia, and some of them are formal, and some of them are informal, but all of them are necessary,\u201d Bowser said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The \u201cessential travel\u201d excuse also applied to lawmakers who attended the late Rep. John Lewis\u2019 funeral in Atlanta last summer.
