Fireworks went off from the top of the stadium during the festivities, as seen in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1RUNeh4M8NU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube video<\/a> posted by Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sanjay.bhanarkar.37\/videos\/592462975471326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 26 Facebook post<\/a> features footage of a crowd watching fireworks being launched from a nearby skyscraper. In the caption, the user identifies them as \u201cOlympic fireworks in Japan.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/07\/13\/fact-check-media-sponsors-ignore-kim-rhode-pro-second-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Media And Sponsors \u2018Ignore\u2019 Olympian Kim Rhode Because She Is Pro-Second Amendment?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the video was actually filmed outside Japan more than six months before the Olympic opening ceremony and is unrelated to the ongoing Summer Games. Footage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YuVhthJjBdk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">same fireworks display<\/a> from a different angle was posted Dec. 31 of last year on YouTube by Taiwan News, which reported it showed a New Year\u2019s celebration at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Taipei-101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taipei 101 skyscraper<\/a> in the Taiwanese capital.<\/p>\n<p>Taipei 101 posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/285638209051773\/videos\/315724023024782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other footage<\/a> of its New Year\u2019s fireworks on its verified Facebook page the same day the display occurred. Photos of the same event <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/photos\/taipei-101-new-years-2021?agreements=ed:7788&amp;begindate=2020-12-30&amp;enddate=2021-01-02&amp;family=editorial&amp;phrase=taipei%20101%20new%20years%202021&amp;recency=daterange&amp;sort=newest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can also be found<\/a> on Getty Images. In Taipei 101\u2019s video and the photos on Getty Images, the skyscraper and fireworks display match those captured in the video erroneously described by some Facebook users as showing Olympic fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>The People\u2019s Republic of China considers self-ruled Taiwan to be territory under its jurisdiction, whereas 15 countries maintain diplomatic recognition of the Taiwanese government, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-34729538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC News<\/a>. Through a 1981 agreement with the International Olympic Committee, Taiwan competes as \u201cChinese Taipei\u201d in the Olympics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20210727-why-is-taiwan-not-called-taiwan-at-the-olympics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AFP<\/a> reported.
