There were just so many layers to that story that kept anyone who was following pretty riveted\u2026. Who are the people that are visiting [her], and what are those relationships? Like, what\u2019s the story&nbsp;<em>around<\/em>&nbsp;the story?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The director and French writers Thomas Bidegain and No\u00e9 Debr\u00e9 created a fictional storyline based on the true story of Knox, albeit with different characters and settings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe decided, \u2018Hey, let\u2019s leave the Amanda Knox case behind,\u2019\u201d McCarthy told the outlet. \u201cBut let me take this piece of the story\u2014an American woman studying abroad involved in some kind of sensational crime and she ends up in jail\u2014and fictionalize everything around it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission that the movie was a blatant rip-off of her life story didn\u2019t sit well with Knox, who has tried to move on with her life after being falsely accused and wrongly imprisoned. Knox took to Medium on Thursday to <a href=\"https:\/\/amandamarieknox.medium.com\/who-owns-my-name-93561f83e502\">call out<\/a> the movie\u2019s premise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes my name belong to me? My face? What about my life? My story? Why does my name refer to events I had no hand in? I return to these questions because others continue to profit off my name, face, &amp; story without my consent. Most recently, the film #STILLWATER,\u201d Knox wrote<\/p>\n<p>Taking issue with McCarthy saying the movie was inspired by the \u201cAmanda Knox saga,\u201d Knox questioned whether he was referring \u201cto anything I did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It refers to the events that resulted from the murder of Meredith Kercher by a burglar named Rudy Guede,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Knox went on to say that she had \u201cnear-zero agency\u201d in how the story was reported or the murder investigated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis focus on me led many to complain that Meredith had been forgotten. But of course, who did they blame for that? Not the Italian authorities. Not the press. Me! Somehow it was my fault that the police and media focused on me at Meredith\u2019s expense,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThe result of this is that 15 years later, my name is the name associated with this tragic series of events, of which I had zero impact on. Meredith\u2019s name is often left out, as is Rudy Guede\u2019s. When he was released from prison recently, this was the NY Post headline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As to the director\u2019s insistence that they wanted to \u201cleave the Amanda Knox case behind,\u201d Knox said his use of her name in promoting the film was the exact opposite of leaving it behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not leaving the Amanda Knox case behind very well if every single review mentions me,\u201d she wrote. \u201cYou\u2019re not leaving the Amanda Knox case behind when my face appears on profiles and articles about the film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knox continued by saying the movie \u201cStillwater\u201d fictionalized her in a way that lined up with false media reporting of the Kercher murder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was accused of being involved in a death orgy, a sex-game gone wrong, when I was nothing but platonic friends with Meredith. But the fictionalized me in #STILLWATER does have a sexual relationship with her murdered roommate,\u201d Knox wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the film, the character based on me gives a tip to her father to help find the man who really killed her friend. Matt Damon tracks him down. This fictionalizing erases the corruption and ineptitude of the authorities,\u201d she continued. \u201cWhat\u2019s crazier is that, in reality, the authorities already had the killer in custody. He was convicted before my trial even began. They didn\u2019t need to find him. And even so, they pressed on in persecuting me, because they didn\u2019t want to admit they had been wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knox then mentions McCarthy\u2019s claim to Vanity Fair that \u201cStillwater\u2019s ending was inspired not by the outcome of Knox\u2019s case, but by the demands of the script he and his collaborators had created.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This, she says, leads to a [SPOILER ALERT] ending where the Knox-inspired character \u201casked the killer to help her get rid of her roommate. She didn\u2019t mean for him to kill her, but her request indirectly led to the murder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you think that impacts my reputation?\u201d Knox asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy fictionalizing away my innocence, my total lack of involvement, by erasing the role of the authorities in my wrongful conviction, McCarthy reinforces an image of me as a guilty and untrustworthy person,\u201d Knox wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Knox then suggested her own screenplay, \u201cdirectly inspired by the life of Matt Damon,\u201d wherein the fictional actor is involved in a murder, not as the killer, but someone who is still somehow guilty. Also, she suggests a character based on McCarthy, who is also just like convicted sexual predator Harvey Weinstein.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s loosely based on reality. Shouldn\u2019t bother Matt or Tom, right?\u201d Knox wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never asked to become a public person. The Italian authorities and global media made that choice for me.
