The post\u2019s figures for the depth and length of the San Andreas Fault also appear to be incorrect.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Fact Check:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The picture of a bicycle helmet-clad man peering into a large crack in the earth has been making the rounds with captions claiming it shows the San Andreas Fault. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/2052934765004319\/posts\/2677033432594446\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This particular Facebook post<\/a> captioned it: \u201cSan Andreas fault line. 132km long and 32km deep.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/08\/22\/fact-check-devils-tower-giant-tree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Scientists Discover Devils Tower Was Originally A Giant Tree?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The San Andreas Fault, which runs through the western side of California, is over 800 miles long and at least 10 miles deep, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/gip\/earthq3\/what.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Geological Survey<\/a>. The Black Crack is \u201conly a few inches wide, about 800\u2032 deep and only runs a few hundred feet in length,\u201d Canyonlands National Park said.<\/p>\n<p>In the comments of one of its Facebook posts, Canyonlands National Park&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CanyonlandsNPS\/photos\/a.10150493381571811\/10150919345231811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explained<\/a> that the Black Crack is an \u201cexample of a geologic feature called a \u2018joint,&#8217;\u201d adding, \u201cIn a fault, the rock fractures and one side of the fracture moves relative to the other. Joints are fractures in the rock that exhibit no movement.
