Since 2008, the federal government has pumped $811 million worth of taxpayer money into the institute, according to data reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/politics\/federal-government-gives-millions-to-group-that-supports-defunding-the-police\/\">The Washington Free Beacon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Vera Institute is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit dedicated to overhauling the U.S. criminal justice system through priorities such as ending \u201cthe criminalization of people of color, immigrants, and people experiencing poverty\u201d and \u201cdrastically\u201d reducing the use of \u201cjails, prisons, and detention centers,\u201d according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vera.org\/strategic-priorities#end-criminalization\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During riots last year sparked by the death of George Floyd, two Vera executives expressed support for the \u201cdefund the police\u201d movement among Black Lives Matter activists. The movement called for stripping funds from local police departments to finance social programs in crime-ridden communities. As the Free Beacon reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"34.343955014058\">\n<p><em>Two top executives at Vera rallied to the defund cause following the death of George Floyd, a black man who was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in May 2020.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cVera is committed to dismantling the current culture of policing and working toward solutions that defund police and shift power to communities,\u201d Vera president Nicholas Turner&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vera.org\/blog\/protecting-black-lives-the-crisis-of-american-policing\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on June 8, 2020.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Turner, who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/display_990\/131941627\/08_2020_prefixes_06-16%2F131941627_201906_990_2020082717263135\">received<\/a>&nbsp;$420,000 in salary and benefits at Vera in 2019, urged support for \u201cthe outrage we\u2019re seeing\u2014in the streets, in our communities, and in the media.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNow is the time to stop tinkering with police reform and to enact wholesale change,\u201d Turner said. \u201cWe\u2019re building on this unique moment of public awareness, outrage, and calls to defund the police.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Another Vera officer, Jamila Hodge, said it was \u201ctime for us to radically dismantle\u201d the criminal justice system.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vera.org\/blog\/how-can-we-change-a-system-set-up-to-control-black-people-by-radically-dismantling-it\">Writing<\/a>&nbsp;in June 2020, she said the criminal justice system \u201cdehumanizes and devalues Black people\u201d and is rooted in \u201cour nation\u2019s legacy of slavery and white supremacy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Amid rising crime in major U.S. cities and backlash from law enforcement, the \u201cdefund the police\u201d message has been rejected by many American voters. A Gallup poll last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/poll-4-out-of-5-black-americans-against-cutting-policing-of-their-communities\">found<\/a> that among black Americans, 81% wanted the same amount or more policing of their communities.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have attempted to pin the \u201cdefund the police\u201d message on Republicans despite high-profile Democrats, such as New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ocasio-cortez-doubles-down-on-defunding-the-police-claims-concerns-over-crime-wave-are-hysteria\">embracing<\/a> the movement. In June, President Joe Biden\u2019s senior adviser Cedric Richmond <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/top-biden-adviser-claims-republicans-defunded-the-police\">argued<\/a> that Republicans are actually responsible for defunding police after numerous Democratic-run cities took steps to cut funding from their police departments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s talk about who defunded the police. When we were in Congress last year trying to pass \u2026 an emergency relief plan for cities that were cash-strapped and laying off police and firefighters, it was the Republicans who objected to it,\u201d Richmond said during an interview on Fox News. \u201cAnd in fact, they didn\u2019t get funding until the American Rescue Plan, which our plan allowed state and local governments to replenish their police departments and do the other things that are needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans are very good at staying on talking points of who says defund the police, but the truth is, they defunded the police.
