Instead of testifying during a public hearing, Yellen privately met with the committee\u2019s chair Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last several months, the Treasury Department has struggled to administer key relief programs critical to the country\u2019s economic recovery,\u201d the Republicans wrote in the letter. \u201cDuring that same period, you avoided a series of opportunities to testify before congressional committees of jurisdiction and answer questions, in public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Financial Services Ranking Member Patrick McHenry <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/13\/janet-yellen-maxine-waters-patrick-mchenry\/\">wrote<\/a> to Waters earlier this month demanding that Yellen publicly testify on the Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) program, which was introduced in coronavirus relief packages last year. Last week, the Treasury Department <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/21\/treasury-department-emergency-rent-assistance-patrick-mchenry\/\">admitted<\/a> that it has distributed less than $3 billion of the $46.6 billion Congress appropriated to the program in two of the most recent stimulus bills.<\/p>\n<p>But the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/29\/justice-kavanaugh-supreme-court-realtors-eviction-moratorium-cdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">federal eviction moratorium<\/a>, which has prevented landlords from evicting low-income tenants throughout the pandemic, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/more\/pdf\/CDC_Eviction_Extension_Order_Final_06242021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">set to expire<\/a> in less than a week. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/21\/treasury-department-emergency-rent-assistance-patrick-mchenry\/\">(RELATED: Treasury Department Has Distributed Fraction Of Emergency Rent Assistance With Just Days Until Evictions Begin)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7247392\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"33\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7247392\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7247392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/GettyImages-1326140490-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"Rep. (Kevin Dietsch\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhat initially appeared to be an effort to avoid answering difficult questions from Republicans and Democrats alike now appears to be something more cynical in light of yesterday morning\u2019s private meeting with a House Democrat,\u201d the Republicans wrote to Yellen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, your closed-door meeting to discuss the Department\u2019s emergency rental assistance program occurred during a public hearing on that very topic,\u201d the letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act enacted in March 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/116\/bills\/hr748\/BILLS-116hr748enr.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">requires<\/a> the Treasury secretary to testify before the House Financial Services Committee on a quarterly basis.<\/p>\n<p>The ERA program&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/sites\/dfiles\/PIH\/documents\/ERAP_PIH_ERAP_FAQs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">provides<\/a> low-income families with rent payment assistance. McHenry has previously expressed concern that individuals the Treasury Department has failed to reach will be unable to fend off eviction when the moratorium expires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith millions of families worried they\u2019ll lose their homes in 10 days, we need to act now to correct this gross mismanagement,\u201d the ranking member told the Daily Caller News Foundation last week. \u201cBut instead of working with us, Democrats are more focused on their progressive agenda \u2014 leaving renters twisting in the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Scalise and McHenry, Oversight Ranking Member James Comer and Small Business Ranking Member Blaine Luetkemeyer also signed the letter.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of the Treasury didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
