But it\u2019s something more retirees should do instead of serving as primary child-care givers while parents are at work,\u201d Ghilarducci wrote in her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-07-21\/personal-finance-do-you-really-want-to-watch-grandchildren-full-time\">op-ed<\/a> titled, \u201cThink Twice, Grandma, Before You Become the Nanny\u201d which was published in Bloomberg on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile you love your children and grandchildren, and relish the idea of spending more time with them, stop and think of what you may be giving up by saying yes to a full-time role,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>She went on to outline some of the activities that could be more worthwhile for those in their golden years than spending time with their grandchildren, like making money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFilling your days with watching your grandchildren means you miss the chance to pursue other interests and interact with other adults. Even more important, at least financially, you forgo the opportunity to earn money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The money grandparents could be out earning could be used to \u201cpay down debt or invest in your health,\u201d Ghilarducci suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Even grandparents who think they are financially secure should consider whether they\u2019re really ready to relax because \u201cthere could be high, unknown costs down the road as you age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spending time with grandchildren might not just cheat grandparents financially, according to the article, because children also carry germs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere may be health risks to consider, too. While there could be other&nbsp;benefits to interacting with children, such as keeping depression at bay and staying mentally sharp, grandparents spending time with young children could be exposed to more germs,\u201d the article says.<\/p>\n<p>Even a grandparent who is vaccinated could catch the coronavirus if \u201cexposed to an unvaccinated child for long periods of time,\u201d the article claims.<\/p>\n<p>The list of cons is still not complete, though. Grandparents must also weigh the \u201cemotional costs\u201d of caring for grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking care of children is rewarding, but it can be a grind. Grandparents may start to feel resentful or that they\u2019re being taken for granted if there isn\u2019t enough appreciation expressed,\u201d the article cautions.<\/p>\n<p>Grandparents\u2019 care could even be bad for children too, the article claims, since \u201cgrandparents tend to allow children to eat more sweets and non-nutritious food than parents do.\u201d The article admits that \u201cmore systematic research is needed\u201d in that area, however.<\/p>\n<p>To remedy the litany of negatives, the author encourages grandparents to \u201cset schedules from the beginning, such as certain days of the week for a set number of hours,\u201d although \u201climiting the amount of time could prove to be the best arrangement of all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The article was promptly mocked on social media, Twitter users panning it as \u201cgrim\u201d and anti-family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s with Bloomberg\u2019s war on grandparents these days?\u201d one Twitter user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tereziaxavier\/status\/1419855214803185667\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cMy grandmother was my \u2018nanny\u2019 growing up and it was great. Don\u2019t know what I\u2019d do without her &amp; I love being able to pay it forward now that I\u2019m able to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI plan on taking care of my grandkids one day if I\u2019m needed.
