Jim Jordan and Darrell Issa sent letters to Treasury Department officials Tuesday demanding answers about the IRS\u2019s ongoing investigation into the leak of wealthy individuals\u2019 tax information.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/517566086\/Letter-to-Inspector-General-for-Tax-Administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letters<\/a>, first obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation, were sent to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) commissioner Charles Rettig and Inspector General for Tax Administration J. Russell George, and asked for transparency regarding the IRS\u2019s investigation into the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/08\/internal-revenue-service-wealthy-americans-taxation-jeff-bezos\/\"><u>leak<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of several wealthy individuals\u2019 private tax records to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/the-secret-irs-files-trove-of-never-before-seen-records-reveal-how-the-wealthiest-avoid-income-tax?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\"><u>ProPublica<\/u><\/a> in June. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/09\/twitter-inaction-propublica-illegal-tax-leaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Twitter Takes No Action Against ProPublica Story On \u2018Illegal\u2019 Tax Leaks Despite Censoring Hunter Biden Coverage)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause tax returns are filled with personal and sensitive information, federal law requires that tax \u2018[r]eturns and return information shall be confidential,\u2019\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cDespite these safeguards, an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employee or employees\u2014or someone with access to the returns\u2014disclosed this confidential information to ProPublica in violation of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan and Issa, both members of the House Judiciary Committee which is conducting its own investigation into the leaks, asked the officials to brief Congress on the status of the investigation, as well as on the procedures that were in place to safeguard taxpayer information before the leak occurred.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7245857\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"36\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7245857\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7245857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/CharlesRettigIRS-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Charles Rettig testifies during a Senate Finance Committee hearing June 8, 2021 on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. (Photo by Tom Williams-Pool\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>They also requested the IRS preserve all documents and communications related to the leak, as well as information relating to the IRS\u2019s investigation. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/22\/propublica-report-donors-exclude\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Report: ProPublica Excluded Its Major Donors From Expose On Billionaires)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers suggested the leak may have been partisan, noting the victims were billionaires such as Warren Buffet, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk, and referencing <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/28\/joe-biden-nancy-pelosi-american-families-plan\/\"><u>calls<\/u><\/a> from prominent Democrats to raise taxes on the rich. They cited ProPublica\u2019s description of the leak as coming at a \u201ccrucial moment\u201d for efforts to address income inequality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThis leak must be viewed in the context of certain Democrat leaders calling for higher taxes on wealthy Americans,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cLeaks of tax information for political purposes harm the American people\u2019s trust in the IRS and its ability to fairly administer federal tax laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"View Letter to Internal Revenue Service Commissioner on Scribd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/517566097\/Letter-to-Internal-Revenue-Service-Commissioner#from_embed\">Letter to Internal Revenue Service Commissioner<\/a> by <a title=\"View Daily Caller News Foundation&#039;s profile on Scribd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/user\/292804634\/Daily-Caller-News-Foundation#from_embed\">Daily Caller News Foundation<\/a> on Scribd<\/p>\n<p>The IRS has a history of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2014\/12\/22\/bombshell-report-irs-targeted-icky-conservative-groups\/\"><u>targeting<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;conservative groups, most notably applying aggressive scrutiny to organizations affiliated with the Tea Party during the Obama administration. The IRS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/10\/27\/560308997\/irs-apologizes-for-aggressive-scrutiny-of-conservative-groups\"><u>settled<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;with over 400 affected groups in 2017, issuing a formal apology for its behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, ProPublica seems to have become a venue for far-left activists at the IRS to leak confidential tax return information to advance their partisan political goals,\u201d the lawmakers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans led by Mitch McConnell had <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/14\/republicans-justice-department-tax-disclosures-irs\/\"><u>urged<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the Department of Justice to conduct an investigation into the matter in June.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers requested the IRS brief Congress on the investigation as soon possible, and no later than Aug. 10.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
