Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has been arrested for treason.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Verdict: False<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is no evidence Milley has been arrested for treason. The claim may stem from a website that says it publishes \u201chumor, parody, and satire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Milley has served as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff since October 2019, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/Our-Story\/Biographies\/Biography\/Article\/614392\/general-mark-a-milley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Defense website<\/a>. Trump\u2019s Catastrophic Final Year<\/a>\u201d said Milley was reportedly concerned former President Donald Trump may attempt a coup in the wake of the 2020 presidential election, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/14\/politics\/donald-trump-election-coup-new-book-excerpt\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/rhen.carberry.1\/posts\/132057269076331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">viral July 22 Facebook post<\/a> baselessly alleges Milley was \u201cforced to retire then arrested,\u201d saying&nbsp;in part, \u201cMilley found himself on the wrong side of politics. He was egotistical and angry with Trump. He was arrested for treason and taken to GITMO.\u201d<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/07\/22\/fact-check-susan-rice-convicted-treason\/\">(RELATED: Has Susan Rice Been Convicted Of Treason?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yet, contrary to the post\u2019s claim, the Joint Chiefs of Staff website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcs.mil\/About\/The-Joint-Staff\/Chairman\/General-Mark-Alexander-Milley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still lists<\/a> Milley as the chairman. Had he been \u201cforced to retire\u201d and subsequently \u201carrested for treason,\u201d major news outlets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Mark+Milley+arrested&amp;rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS820US820&amp;oq=Mark+Milley+arrested&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j69i60l2.3067j0j15&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">would have<\/a> reported it. The Joint Chiefs of Staff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcs.mil\/Media\/News\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has also not mentioned<\/a> anything to that effect in its media releases, nor has the <a href=\"https:\/\/search.justice.gov\/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;affiliate=justice&amp;sort_by=&amp;query=Mark+Milley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Justice<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/search.usa.gov\/search\/news?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;affiliate=defensegov&amp;channel=10132&amp;sort_by=r&amp;query=Mark+Milley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Defense<\/a> announced such a thing.<\/p>\n<p>Milley participated in a news briefing at the Pentagon alongside Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on July 21, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mxDV_TijOYo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video<\/a> shared on YouTube by PBS NewsHour shows. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcs.mil\/Media\/News\/News-Display\/Article\/2706253\/readout-of-chairman-of-the-joint-chiefs-of-staff-gen-mark-a-milleys-meeting-wit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joint Chiefs of Staff website<\/a>, he also had a meeting with Croatian Chief of Defense Adm. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/who_is_who_174026.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Hranj<\/a> on July 23, a day after the Facebook post made the claim.<\/p>\n<p>The post\u2019s claim may have originated from a May 5 Real Raw News article, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/realrawnews.com\/2021\/05\/pentagon-coup-joint-chiefs-overthrown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pentagon Coup! Joint Chiefs Overthrown<\/a>,\u201d that alleges Milley was arrested in mid-April for being a \u201ctraitor to America and its people\u201d and taken to Guantanamo Bay. Real Raw News, however, includes a Disclaimer on its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/realrawnews.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">About Us<\/a>\u201d page that states the website \u201ccontains humor, parody, and satire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Joint Chiefs of Staff did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A post shared on Facebook claims Gen.
