Previously, parents solicited tutoring services throughout a child\u2019s primary and secondary education to prepare them for the National College Entrance Examination \u2014 also known as gaokao \u2014 which determines whether a Chinese student is eligible for undergraduate education.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/chinas-tal-education-expects-hit-new-private-tutoring-rules-2021-07-25\/\"><span>Reuters<\/span><\/a><span> reports:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"21\">\n<p><i><span>The news sent shockwaves through the sector and parents struggled to understand how exactly the move would impact their children in a highly competitive education system. Under the new rules, all institutions offering tutoring on the school curriculum will be registered as non-profit organisations, and no new licences will be granted, according to an official document.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The new rules will result in existing online tutoring firms being subjected to extra scrutiny and after-school tutoring will be prohibited during weekends, public holidays and school vacations, the document said.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>China\u2019s for-profit education sector has been under scrutiny as part of Beijing\u2019s push to ease pressure on school children and reduce a cost burden on parents that has contributed to a drop in birth rates.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Two months ago, the Chinese government revealed that it would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/china-now-says-it-will-allow-families-to-have-three-children-amid-fears-of-population-crash\"><span>allow<\/span><\/a><span> parents to have up to three children \u2014 an increase from the previous two-child policy, which superseded the decades-long one-child policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/31\/world\/asia\/china-three-child-policy.html\"><span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span> explained:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><i><span>The announcement by the ruling Communist Party represents an acknowledgment that its limits on reproduction, the world\u2019s toughest, have jeopardized the country\u2019s future. The labor pool is shrinking and the population is graying, threatening the industrial strategy that China has used for decades to emerge from poverty to become an economic powerhouse.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>After Chinese authorities announced the new tutoring regulations, private education businesses were sent reeling. Reuters reports that China\u2019s education industry subindex plummeted by 14%. Meanwhile, shares for TAL Education group \u2014 which are available on American exchanges \u2014 plummeted from $20.52 on July 22 to $4.69 on July 26.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Studies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinesetouristagency.com\/chinese-parents-spend-up-to-43500-a-year-on-their-childrens-extracurricular-classes\/\"><span>indicate<\/span><\/a><span> that some Chinese parents may spend between $17,400 and $43,500 per year on extracurricular tutoring \u2014 three times the nation\u2019s median income.
