Tragic events like the Pulse nightclub and Parkland shootings go from being media spectacles to quotidian events at an alarming rate in a country that often heralds the Second Amendment above meaningful safety for all its citizens. The vigilantism of widespread gun ownership puts Black Americans in an especially vulnerable position given the brutality and human cost of discriminatory policing.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The gun violence epidemic continues to spark debate about the Second Amendment and who has a right to bear arms. But often absent in these debates is the intrinsic anti-Blackness of the unequal enforcement of gun laws, and the relationship between appeals to gun rights and the justification of militia violence. Throughout the history of this country, the rhetoric of gun rights has been selectively manipulated and utilized to inflame white racial anxiety, and to frame Blackness as an inherent threat.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The host of the episode \u2014 after joking that, because of \u201cwhiteness,\u201d Batman would be treated differently if he were a black man \u2014 asked Anderson about her intentions in writing \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Second-Race-Fatally-Unequal-America\/dp\/1635574250\"><span>The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America<\/span><\/a><span>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMy original point,\u201d responded Anderson, \u201cwas to figure out whether African-Americans actually have Second Amendment rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After the 2016 killing of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/philando-castile\"><span>Philando Castile<\/span><\/a><span> at the hands of police, Anderson \u201cwent hunting and ended up back in the seventeenth century.\u201d She started seeing \u201call of these laws, and I started seeing all of this fear about black people \u2014 the fear of the enslaved, the fear of retribution, the architecture that was created to control black people, to strip them of their rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Social media users, however, noted that gun control measures \u2014 which the ACLU <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/blog\/civil-liberties\/mobilization\/aclus-position-gun-control\"><span>supports<\/span><\/a><span> in some instances \u2014 restrict the ability of ethnic minorities to defend themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo there\u2019s a 58% increase in black people in america buying firearms &amp; u want us to believe the gun laws were spawned from racism?\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antonia_okafor\/status\/1419381919008055296\"><span>noted<\/span><\/a><span> African-American gun rights advocate Antonia Okafor Cover. \u201cClassic racist, gun control tactics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo why did black American gun ownership sky rocket in 2020?\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LPTN1776\/status\/1419329779879268356\"><span>added<\/span><\/a><span> the Libertarian Party of Tennessee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNo, the first gun control laws were created to prevent slaves from revolting, and to keep freed slaves fearing for their lives,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LPTexas\/status\/1419364865702043652\"><span>commented<\/span><\/a><span> the Libertarian Party of Texas. \u201cRestricting minorities right to bear arms has been the calling card of American racism, not the other way around.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
