People in the city and county also will be urged, but not required, to wear masks outdoors, especially in group settings.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve lost more than 500 St. Louisans to COVID-19, and if our region doesn\u2019t work together to protect one another, we could see spikes that overwhelm our hospital and public health systems,\u201d&nbsp;<span class=\"s2\">Dr. Fredrick Echols<\/span>, acting director of health for the City of St. Louis, said Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On Friday, there were 266 new <a href=\"https:\/\/stlcorona.com\/resources\/covid-19-statistics\/\"><span class=\"s1\">cases<\/span><\/a> in St. Louis County, Missouri, with the average positivity rate at 9.8% over the past week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Dr. Faisal Khan is the acting director of the St. Louis County Department of Public Health. Khan reportedly said that vaccines are the \u201cbest way to stop the fast-spreading Delta variant of COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe are relentlessly committed to making vaccinations more accessible and convenient,\u201d Dr. Khan said Friday. \u201cIn the meantime, we need everyone, vaccinated or not, to wear masks in crowded indoor settings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Local officials have pushed back against the mandate.
