The sanctions were placed on Friday against multiple individuals, including former Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.<\/p>\n<p>These have been the first counter-sanctions imposed by China under a recently passed law requiring any foreign sanctions placed on the regime to be reciprocated. Last week, the White House announced sanctions against seven Chinese individuals and warned U.S. entities of growing risks posed by Beijing.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In response to the erroneous practice of the US side, China has decided to take reciprocal countermeasures, and impose sanctions on seven US individuals and entity according to the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jn2EapVcqc\">pic.twitter.com\/jn2EapVcqc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 China Mission Geneva (@ChinaMissionGva) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChinaMissionGva\/status\/1418591156519178242?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 23, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>During a press briefing on Friday, Joe Biden\u2019s Press Secretary Jen Psaki responded by saying the U.S. would not be deterred by an sanctions placed by China.<\/p>\n<p>She went on to say, \u201cthese actions are the latest examples of how Beijing punishes private citizens, companies and civil society organizations as a way to send political signals and further illustrates the PRC\u2019s deteriorating investment climate and rising political risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s sanctions come just two days before White House officials are expected to travel to Beijing for bilateral talks.
