Move could become official in a week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.535714285714\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Prominent Big 12 source tells the American-Statesman the Texas-OU move to the SEC is almost done. &#8220;They&#8217;ve been working on this for a minimum of 6 months, and the A&amp;M leadership was left out of discussions and wasn&#8217;t told about it.&#8221; Move could become official in a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kirk Bohls (@kbohls) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kbohls\/status\/1418553992691466245?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 23, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>According to ESPN, the report that Texas A&amp;M was left out of the conversation is not true.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Regardless, the Big 12 as we know it will cease to exist if the move happens, and the dominance of the SEC will only continue to grow.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The report comes days after speculation emerged that the two Big 12 powerhouses reached out to the Southeastern Conference about potentially joining. On Thursday, the Big 12 athletic directors, university presidents, and chancellors held a videoconference to discuss the situation, with OU and Texas declining to attend.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere is a recognition that institutions may act in their own self-interest, however, there is an expectation that members adhere to Conference bylaws and the enforcement of Grant of Rights agreements,\u201d the Big 12 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/31865190\/big-12-officials-meet-discuss-possible-departures-oklahoma-texas-sec\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in a statement to ESPN.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>OU and Texas signed a Big 12 grant-of-rights agreement that ties the two schools\u2019 football and basketball programs to the conference through June 30, 2025, meaning the conference would own the media rights for both sports.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The schools could owe the Big 12 conference $76 million if they did leave and they would need the support of 11 of the 14 SEC schools in order to join the conference.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The move directly impacts Texas A&amp;M University, which joined the SEC in 2012 partly to get away from their in-state rival.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe want to be the only SEC program in the state of Texas,\u201d A&amp;M athletic director Ross Bjork said. \u201cThere\u2019s a reason why Texas A&amp;M left the Big 12 \u2014 to be standalone, to have our own identity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.3809523809524\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Texas A&amp;M AD Ross Bjork on news that Texas and OU could be coming to the SEC: \u201cWe want to be the only SEC team from the state of Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ross Dellenger (@RossDellenger) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RossDellenger\/status\/1417934845469134854?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 21, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"15.367781155015\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ross Bjork says he was unaware of Texas\/OU interest in joining the SEC. SEC ADs have not discussed the issue, he says.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s clear where the Aggies stand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s a reason why Texas A&amp;M left the Big 12 \u2013 to be stand alone &amp; have our own identity. That\u2019s our feeling,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ross Dellenger (@RossDellenger) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RossDellenger\/status\/1417936468937482240?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 21, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re the best league in college football and everybody wants to play there, and now you\u2019ve got two iconic brands that want to join, too,\u201d Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/31864932\/potential-texas-oklahoma-move-sec-hurdles-domino-effects-know-far\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cIt\u2019s an exclusive club and not everybody gets in, so good luck, especially if A&amp;M has anything to do with it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Should Texas and OU make the move to the SEC, the Big 12 would be left with eight teams, making it necessary for the conference to reach out to other schools about potentially joining the Big 12. Houston, Cincinnati and UCF expressed interest the last time the conference discussed expansion.<\/p>\n<p>As conference realignment in college football continues, the question becomes whether other conferences will also look to add teams.<\/p>\n<p><span>The PAC-12 \u2013 which added Colorado and Utah in 2011 \u2014 said they would be \u201cfoolish\u201d not to listen to potential candidates.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI consider the Pac-12 an exclusive club with a high barrier to entry,\u201d Kliavkoff <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/31869605\/pac-12-commissioner-george-kliavkoff-says-conference-not-looking-add-schools-foolish-not-listen\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWe love the schools and teams we have today.
