Wallen has since&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-morgan-wallen-posts-apology-video-talks-sobriety-following-n-word-video-deplatforming\">apologized<\/a> for using the slur, which happened \u201con hour 72 of a bender\u201d late at night in Nashville,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fans-carry-morgan-wallen-to-3-billboard-music-awards-after-ban-deplatforming-over-leaked-n-word-video\/\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported. \u201cWallen was banned at appearing at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards over the incident. He was not barred from being nominated for major awards, however, since nominations are tied to his position on Billboard charts as well as his music sales and streams on online platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a clip from the interview, Strahan said to Wallen, \u201cThere\u2019s going to be a lot of people who are going to watch this and say, \u2018He\u2019s only sitting down because he wants to clean up his image; it\u2019s all a performance\u2019 \u2013 so what do you say to that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wallen replied, \u201cI understand that. I understand that, y\u2019know, I\u2019m not ever going to make everyone happy, but man, I can only come tell my truth and that\u2019s all I know to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strahan asked Wallen, \u201cWhen did you realize that what you had done was a big deal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy manager called me probably two hours before the video came out, he was like, \u2018Are you sitting down?\u2019\u201d Wallen answered. \u201cNo one\u2019s ever called me and said that before. \u2026 I went to \u2014 one of my friends has a house out in the middle of nowhere. Just sittin\u2019 in that, sittin\u2019 in that house tryin\u2019 to figure out what I was supposed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo take me back to that night,\u201d Strahan urged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had some of my long-time friends in town; we\u2019d kinda just been partyin\u2019 all weekend, and we figured we\u2019d just go hard for the two or three days that we were there,\u201d Wallen recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did this happen, out of nowhere? You just referred to someone with a racial slur?\u201d Strahan pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I don\u2019t\u2019 think it was just \u2014 it just happened,\u201d Wallen said. \u201cI was around some of my friends, you know, we say dumb stuff together. It was in our minds, it was just playful. I don\u2019t know if \u2013 it sounds ignorant but that\u2019s where it came from. And it\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strahan surmised, \u201cAnd had there been no video of the incident, we obviously wouldn\u2019t be sitting here right now.\u201d Then he accused, \u201cThis is not the first time you said the word. This is the word that you use frequently amongst your friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say frequently, no,\u201d Wallen said. \u201cNot frequently. It was just around this certain group of friends, I would say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn what way was it used?\u201d Strahan pressed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one of my best friends,\u201d Wallen answered. \u201cWe were all clearly drunk and I was asking his girlfriend to take care of him because he was drunk and he was leaving. I didn\u2019t mean it in any derogatory manner at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strahan stated, \u201cThere are a lot of people who are going to say, \u2018We\u2019ve been drunk and we\u2019ve never used the word.\u2019 Even when you\u2019re drunk there are certain things you do and you don\u2019t do. What made you think that the word was ever appropriate to use?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure,\u201d Wallen replied. \u201cI think I was just ignorant about it. I don\u2019t think I sat down and was like, \u2018Hey, is this right or is this wrong?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strahan then turned to the word Wallen used. \u201cAnd do you know the history of the word?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, yeah. I\u2019ve heard some stories in the initial conversations that I had after that, just how some people are treated even still, today,\u201d Wallen said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m just like, I haven\u2019t seen that with my eyes. That pain or that insignificant feeling or whatever it is that makes you feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat goes back to slavery by white people to dehumanize black people and make them feel \u2018less than,\u2019 Strahan asserted. \u201cIt\u2019s also, if you dig deeper, a word that a lot of black people heard before they were terrorized, beaten or even possibly killed. So it\u2019s a word that really\u2014 I\u2019d be called it \u2014 makes you mad, makes you angry, doesn\u2019t make you feel good at all.&nbsp; So do you understand why it makes black people so upset?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how to put myself in their shoes because I\u2019m not, you know, but I do understand it, especially when I say that I\u2019m using it playfully, whatever, ignorantly, I understand that that must sound like he doesn\u2019t understand,\u201d Wallen answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did you speak with?\u201d Strahan asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBMAC is one of the first organizations that I spoke with; the Black Music Action Coalition,\u201d Wallen said. \u201cI spoke with Kevin Liles; I spoke with Eric Hutcherson; I spoke with BeBe Winans is another one that I spoke with. I went to check myself into rehab. For 30 days I spent some time out in San Diego, CA.&nbsp;Just trying to figure it out: why I am acting this way? Do I have an alcohol problem? Do I have a deeper issue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strahan then noted that the album skyrocketed after the release of the video.<\/p>\n<p>Wallen revealed giving half a million dollars in order to make penance: \u201cBefore this incident, my album was already doing well. It was already being well-received by critics and by fans. Me and my team noticed that whenever this whole incident happened, that there was a spike in my sales, so we tried to calculate what the number of, how much it had actually spiked from this incident. We got to a number somewhere around $500,000. We decided to donate that money to some organizations, BMAC being the first one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strahan noted black country music star Mickey Guyton had claimed the country music world was racist. He asked Wallen, \u201cDo you believe there is a race problem in country music overall?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wallen answered, \u201cIt would seem that way, yeah. I really haven\u2019t really sat and thought about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strahan concluded, \u201cAlthough he was widely condemned by the industry back in the spring, Morgan Wallen has emerged from this scandal to become the best-selling artist of the year so far, according to Rolling Stone Magazine.
