Maxine Waters (D-CA) is being praised by critics of Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva after asking federal authorities on Wednesday to investigate claims that a \u201crogue, violent gang\u201d of deputies is operating within the Sheriff\u2019s Department\u2019s Compton station.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke, Waters requested the U.S. Department of Justice probe the alleged existence of a group called the \u201cExecutioners\u201d and \u201claunch a pattern or practice investigation into the Los Angeles Sheriff\u2019s Department for potential civil rights and constitutional violations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move comes as Sheriff Villanueva, a Democrat, has been feuding with several progressive California elected officials and a coalition of anti-police activist groups.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Waters reportedly said she would make the request seven months ago, but held off until Garland and Clarke were confirmed, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KateCagle\/status\/1417947362090127363\">according<\/a> to Spectrum News 1 reporter Kate Cagle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-doj-nominee-repeatedly-posted-misinformation-about-breonna-taylors-death-on-social-media\">Biden\u2019s DOJ Nominee Repeatedly Posted Misinformation About Breonna Taylor\u2019s Death On Social Media<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Waters cited testimony from Deputy Art Gonzalez, who filed a whistleblower complaint last year. He claimed more than a dozen deputies at the Compton station have matching tattoos symbolizing their involvement with the Executioners, which he described as a \u201cgang.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeputies at the LASD Compton station reportedly \u2018chase ink,\u2019 a slang term for a deputy who attempts to win favor with the Executioners by committing violent acts in hopes of receiving the group tattoo denoting gang membership,\u201d Waters wrote. \u201cThe gang allegedly sets illegal arrest quotas, threatens and harasses fellow deputies, and holds parties after shootings, called \u2018998 parties,\u2019 which are in part a celebration that a new deputy will be inked by the gang. The tattoos worn by the police gang reportedly feature Nazi imagery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c998\u201d reportedly references the code for a deputy-involved shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumnews1.com\/ca\/la-west\/public-safety\/2020\/08\/30\/whistleblower-testifies-deputy-who-shot-gardena-teen-was--chasing-ink--\">claimed<\/a> that two deputies from the Compton station involved in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Andres Guardado last year were prospective members of the Executioners. Their attorneys have denied those accusations.<\/p>\n<p>Captain John Satterfield, a spokesman for the Sheriff\u2019s Department, said Waters\u2019 letter is based on \u201cunproven allegations which she is portraying as facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018whistle blower\u2019 lawsuit she cites was dismissed with prejudice for lack of evidence,\u201d he continued. \u201cWhat we do have evidence of is the explosion of homelessness in Maxine Waters\u2019 district and throughout Los Angeles County. The peculiar timing of these allegations appear to be a distraction from the many failures, at all levels of government, to address this homelessness crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-07-21\/maxine-waters-requests-sheriffs-department-compton-executioners-investigation\">According<\/a> to the Los Angeles Times, \u201cSecret groups of deputies with matching tattoos \u2013 and names like the Vikings, Regulators, 3000 Boys and the Banditos \u2013 have plagued the agency for decades.\u201d They have also been called \u201cdeputy cliques.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Progressive activists have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/l-a-sheriff-calls-progressive-activists-white-millionaires-who-live-in-mansions-they-accuse-him-of-being-in-a-secret-hispanic-gang\">accused<\/a> Sheriff Villanueva of being a member of the Banditos, a clique based out of the department\u2019s East L.A. station. They have suggested he is hiding tattoos on his body that would show an affiliation with the group.<\/p>\n<p>More details from the Times:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"19\">\n<p><em>The Sheriff\u2019s Department has been aware of secret groups of inked deputies for decades but has struggled to crack down, despite repeated internal and independent investigations and instances in which&nbsp;members are accused of misconduct.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>L.A. County has paid out at least about $55 million in settlements in cases in which sheriff\u2019s deputies accused of wrongdoing have been alleged to belong to a secret society, according to a report prepared by county attorneys that lists nearly 60 cases, some of them still pending, and names eight specific cliques.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sheriff Alex Villanueva implemented a policy banning deputies from joining illicit groups \u2014 the first sheriff to do so \u2014 but has been criticized by department watchdogs for a lack of enforcement.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In January, then-California Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced the launch of a civil rights probe into LASD.
