Armed with that knowledge, the \u201cYes 4 Minneapolis Committee\u201d is pressing a measure that would give voters the option to amend the city\u2019s charter to move towards a \u201cpublic safety\u201d department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Minneapolis Policy and Government Oversight Committee, which is comprised of all 13 Minneapolis City Council members, approved the measure proposed by the advocacy group Yes 4 Minneapolis Committee in an 11-2 vote that will now be passed along to the general council for a vote,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/minneapolis-city-council-vote-replace-police\">per Fox News<\/a>, citing local sources. \u201cIf the City Council votes in favor of the amendment, it would appear on the general election ballot for Minneapolis residents on Nov. 2.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fox 9 Minneapolis reports that the measure, if approved, \u201cwould give the voters power to replace the city police department\u201d and \u201ccall&nbsp;for public safety to have a \u2018comprehensive public health approach\u2019 but does not explain what that means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the plan, the police department would be replaced in the charter with a public safety department but doesn\u2019t outline how the department will work or be structured,\u201d the local outlet added.<\/p>\n<p>The measure reads, simply, \u201cShall the Charter be amended to create a Department of Public Safety that employs a comprehensive public health approach with a range of strategies and personnel, including licensed peace officers as necessary, to fulfill responsibilities for community safety, with the general nature of the amendments being briefly indicated in the explanatory note below, which is made a part of this ballot?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Yes 4 Minneapolis Committee crowed about the vote in a tweet, claiming the \u201cpeople of Minneapolis\u201d had \u201cspoken,\u201d and rebuked the city\u2019s charter commission, though the petition had just 20,000 signatures \u2014 around 5% of the Minneapolis population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s vote confirms what we\u2019ve known all along: The people of Minneapolis are excited and ready to participate in their democracy to keep themselves and one another safe,\u201d the Yes 4 Minneapolis Committee tweeted, \u201cand that a handful of unelected people continue attempts to derail these efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Minneapolis City Council has persisted in their efforts to first \u201cdefund\u201d and then \u201cdisband\u201d the city\u2019s law enforecement agencies, despite a shocking spike in violence that has the city on pace for a record-setting number of homicides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kare11.com\/article\/news\/crime\/minneapolis-on-pace-for-near-record-homicides\/89-eed4ccdb-9d61-42b1-81bc-aeca9b181fbe\">according to KARE 11 Minneapolis<\/a>. By June 1 of 2021, the city had already racked up twice the number of shootings as in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Crime has become so bad that a group of eight residents sued the city of Minneapolis to force the City Council to \u201crefund\u201d the police and expand the police department to the number of officers required by the city\u2019s charter. Just last week, a Hennepin County judge ruled that Minneapolis must hire on additional police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the order, the city must fund a police force of at least .0017 employees per resident, which will equal around 730 sworn officers, or .2 percent of the city\u2019s population following the publication of the 2020 census,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/minneapolis-must-hire-more-cops-next-year-judge-rules-city-battles-crime-wave-1606485\">Newsweek reported<\/a>. The hiring of more police officers must be completed by June 30, 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the department is operating with around 100 fewer officers than the order requires.<\/p>\n<p>One of the plaintiffs in the case blamed the rise in crime on the city\u2019s fervor to \u201cdefund the police,\u201d and suggested that those pressing the city council to strip the city of law enforcement are \u201cyoung\u201d and may not live in the area.<\/p>\n<p>When the announcement was made to defund the police \u2026 that just opened the doors to a level of mayhem where taboos were erased, standards were no longer acknowledged because only the cops could be wrong \u2013 a citizen couldn\u2019t be wrong,\u201d the petitioner said. \u201cAnd so, the naivete of the leadership to not understand how the lawless community would exploit their announcement was maddening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mantra is not \u2018either\/or,\u2019 but \u2018both\/and,\u201d he added. \u201cMost of the protesters are young. They\u2019re college students. They\u2019re younger than college students.
