Alvarez \u2060\u2014 who plays infielder in the Miami Marlins minor league system \u2014 is the first baseball player to carry the American flag for the Olympic delegation.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"5.5255813953488\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">An honor unlike any other.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eddyalvarez90?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@eddyalvarez90<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/S10Bird?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@S10Bird<\/a> have been selected as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TeamUSA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TeamUSA<\/a>\u2019s flag bearers for the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TokyoOlympics?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TokyoOlympics<\/a> Opening Ceremony. \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/w7VFMYANft\">pic.twitter.com\/w7VFMYANft<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Team USA (@TeamUSA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeamUSA\/status\/1417809698611290123?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 21, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/eddy-alvarez-named-usa-flag-bearer-for-tokyo-olympics\"><span>MLB<\/span><\/a><span> reports:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><i><span>Although this will be Alvarez\u2019s first time representing Team USA in baseball, he already knows what it is like to win an Olympic medal as he won silver as part of the 5,000-meter four-man short track speedskating team during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. When Alvarez, 31, was called up to the Marlins to make his MLB debut in 2020, he became the first Winter Olympic Games medalist to play Major League Baseball and the first non-baseball Olympian to play in the Majors since Jim Thorpe in 1913.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cIt is an honor and a privilege to be named as one of the flag bearers by my fellow Team USA athletes for the Opening Ceremony,\u201d Alvarez said, as recorded by MLB. \u201cBeing a first-generation Cuban American, my story represents the American Dream. My family has sacrificed so much for me to have the opportunity to wave this flag proudly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/sports\/mlb\/miami-marlins\/article252846048.html\"><span>The Miami Herald<\/span><\/a><span> added:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"16\">\n<p><i><span>Three days earlier, Alvarez had said that simply having his name considered for being Team USA\u2019s flag bearer \u2014 \u201cto hold Old Glory, a symbol of freedom and liberty to many around the world, not just the United States\u201d \u2014 was \u201ca victory of its own.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The five intertwined rings symbolic of the Olympics are tattooed on his left bicep and etched on the nob of his baseball bats. They\u2019re a reminder of the opportunity afforded to him because of sacrifices from his parents, Walter and Mabel, who immigrated from Cuba.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cThey got out for a chance at an opportunity and freedom,\u201d Alvarez said. \u201cBecause of them, I\u2019m able to put on this uniform and represent this country. Because of them, I\u2019m able to basically have a freedom of speech.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Alvarez\u2019s selection to bear the American flag carries special significance as Cuba witnesses its largest protest movement in decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As Sen.
