Jerretta Sandoz, the vice president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, told <a href=\"https:\/\/losangeles.cbslocal.com\/2021\/07\/20\/caught-on-camera-granada-hills-tj-maxx-shoplifting\/\">CBS News<\/a>, \u201cThey didn\u2019t even run out, they walked out. And so, that\u2019s sending a message that we, the criminals, are winning.\u201d She added, \u201cIf they\u2019re caught, they\u2019re probably given the equivalent of a traffic ticket. So it\u2019s not taken seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tv\/CRcUDjuBkzb\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"13\" readability=\"-9.7164179104478\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2014, California passed Proposition 47, which changed the penalty for stealing less than $950 from a felony to a misdemeanor.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cEarlier this month, video emerged on social media showing shoplifters brazenly making off with stolen goods after ransacking a local Neiman Marcus store in the Union Square section of San Francisco,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9811753\/Two-thieves-brazenly-rob-TJ-Maxx-rash-California-shoplifting-continues.html\">The Daily Mail<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>Criminal defense attorney Alexandra Kazarian Sandoz cited an incident from last week in which an employee of a Rite Aid in Glassell Park was shot and killed when he attempted to stop two men stealing a case of beer. He stated, \u201cThe employees at TJ Maxx have been told that, in these specific circumstances, it\u2019s not worth it for you to go and physically attack, physically stop people that are walking out with this inventory. Because these businesses have insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alex Bastian, special advisor to leftist Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n, stated, \u201cOnce officers make an arrest or cite someone for a crime, they will present the case to our office. We make charging decisions accordingly. We do so based on the facts, the totality of the circumstances, and the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gasc\u00f3n tweeted earlier this month, \u201cMy approach to public safety is shaped by a 40+ yr career in law enforcement, a lifetime of experiences that showed me first-hand that the \u2018punishment first\u201d &amp; \u2018lock \u2018 em up\u2019 approach fails to create long term community safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Gasc\u00f3n was sworn in December 2020 after serving as the DA of San Francisco from 2011 to 2019,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamag.com\/citythinkblog\/george-gascon-reforms\/\">LA Magazine<\/a> reported, \u201cHe also wants to reevaluate sentences in cases where the inmate has served more than 20 years in state prison, demonstrated signs of rehabilitation, or was sentenced to adult prisons as a child. He will also instruct prosecutors in his office to cease requesting cash bail for any misdemeanor, and non-serious or non-violent felony offense. On January 1, he will eliminate requests for money bail entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In April, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/watch-he-brought-down-his-10-commandments-its-not-working-la-sheriff-bashes-leftist-la-county-da\/\">blasted<\/a> Gasc\u00f3n, snapping, \u201cHe brought down his 10 Commandments, the tablets from the mountain, his special directives, and expects the entire world to go with it, somehow it\u2019s going to work. Well, it\u2019s not working.\u201d He added that he had only spoken to Gasc\u00f3n&nbsp;once since Gasc\u00f3n&nbsp;was sworn in as DA last December, adding, \u201cWe want him to be successful, but it can\u2019t come at the expense of public safety and at the expense of victims of crime.
