John Bel Edwards said the bill is \u201ca solution in search of a problem that simply does not exist in Louisiana.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>South Dakota faced a similar situation in March when South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem did not sign H.B. 1217, a bill banning biological males from women\u2019s sports, after the state legislature rejected her suggested changes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Louisiana House of Representatives failed Wednesday to override the governor\u2019s veto of a bill banning biological males from women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>Louisiana\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/legis.la.gov\/legis\/ViewDocument.aspx?d=1210805\">Fairness in Women\u2019s Sports Act<\/a> would have prohibited biological males from participating in female intercollegiate, interscholastic, or intramural athletic sports that receive state funding.<\/p>\n<p>The state House voted 68-30 Wednesday on the Fairness in Women\u2019s Sports Act, failing to overturn Democratic Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards\u2019 veto by just two votes of the 70 needed. It was the state\u2019s first-ever veto override session, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theadvocate.com\/baton_rouge\/news\/politics\/legislature\/article_214043b0-ea4b-11eb-b3ba-37ac85e77755.html\">the Advocate reported,<\/a> intended to override Edward\u2019s veto of both the Fairness in Women\u2019s Sports Act and a bill allowing the concealed carry of guns without a permit.<\/p>\n<p>The bill had originally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billtrack50.com\/BillDetail\/1355259\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed<\/a> the state Senate 29-6 and the state House 78-19.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Louisiana state Sen. Katrina Jackson explained in a Wednesday evening press release that she did not vote to override the veto because of a technicality she had not previously noticed when supporting the bill. The bill did not restrict transgender females from male sports, Jackson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current LHSAA policy is more restrictive and allowing this bill to move forward would have undermined current rules,\u201d Democrats Jackson, Regina Barrow, Travis Johnson, Chad Brown, Mack Cormier, and Pat Moore, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KatrinaRJackson\/status\/1417961073433534470\">said in a joint statement<\/a>. Jackson did not respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation for clarification of her remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/23\/louisiana-trasngender-lgbtq\/\">vetoed the bill<\/a> in late June, calling it \u201ca solution in search of a problem that simply does not exist in Louisiana.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/02\/desantis-noem-womens-sports-ncaa\/\">(RELATED: \u2018Woke\u2019 Pressure \u2018Strengthened\u2019 DeSantis Decision To Ban Biological Males From Women\u2019s Sports, Spox Says)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The gun bill had failed to get the needed votes for an override in the Louisiana state Senate, according to the Advocate, though the Senate successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwltv.com\/article\/news\/politics\/louisiana-transgender-sports-ban-veto-session-vote\/289-944c894e-9baa-4e1b-bd33-a75c609d01cf\">voted Tuesday<\/a> to override Edward\u2019s veto on the transgender bill. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/22\/noem-political-theater-adf-biological-males-womens-sports\/\">(RELATED: Conservatives Accuse Noem Of \u2018Political Theater\u2019 Over Bill Banning Biological Males From Women\u2019s Sports)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Louisiana has <a href=\"https:\/\/lailluminator.com\/2021\/07\/19\/louisiana-legislatures-veto-override-session-6-things-to-know\/\">only seen two successful overrides<\/a> in the history of the state: one in 1991 when lawmakers overrode former Republican Gov. Buddy Roemer\u2019s veto of a bill penalizing doctors for performing abortions, and one in 1993 when lawmakers overrode former Democratic Gov. Edwin Edwards\u2019 veto of the attorney general\u2019s annual budget. Those vetoes <a href=\"https:\/\/lailluminator.com\/2021\/07\/19\/louisiana-legislatures-veto-override-session-6-things-to-know\/\">occurred<\/a> during a a regular lawmaking session, rather than a veto override session focused on overturning the governor\u2019s veto.<\/p>\n<p>South Dakota faced a similar situation in March when South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/29\/noem-hb1217-south-dakota-bill-transgender\/\">failed to sign<\/a> H.B. 1217, a bill banning biological males from women\u2019s sports, after the state legislature voted to reject her suggested changes.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s House rejected Noem\u2019s style and form veto in March, sending the bill back to Noem, who returned the bill to the House the same day with a failure to certify, <a href=\"https:\/\/rapidcityjournal.com\/news\/legislature\/house-rejects-noems-style-and-form-veto-on-trans-sports-bill\/article_a12dee27-8dd2-5249-aad4-0186ede4de95.html\">the Rapid City Journal reported<\/a>.
