In the process, many are rendered deeply confused about who they are \u2014 and who God made them to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Allie Beth Stuckey is the host of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alliebethstuckey.com\/category\/podcast\/\"><span>Relatable<\/span><\/a><span> podcast, where she discusses culture, news, and politics from a biblical perspective, as well as the author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/608241\/youre-not-enough-and-thats-okay-by-allie-beth-stuckey\/\"><i><span>You\u2019re Not Enough (&amp; That\u2019s Okay): Escaping the Toxic Culture of Self-Love<\/span><\/i><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After diving into topics as diverse as Big Tech censorship and Texas Democrats\u2019 COVID-infested Capitol vacation on the most recent episode of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/show\/candace\"><span>Candace<\/span><\/a><span>, Stuckey sat down with The Daily Wire to discuss how young people \u2014 and their parents \u2014 can wield the truth to counter the lies of leftism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cIf the self is the problem, it can\u2019t also be the solution\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Predating the most recent movement to impress leftism on young Americans is the postmodern ideology of \u201cself-love\u201d \u2014 the ethos that people can find the answer to their problems and life\u2019s deepest questions within themselves \u2014 which Stuckey\u2019s book seeks to debunk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt starts with this huge, lucrative self-help industry that began long before Millennials and Gen Z came of age,\u201d said Stuckey. \u201cIt told people: \u2018If you just follow these ten steps and you make yourself better and you commit to self-improvement, your life will be better. You\u2019ll be happier, you\u2019ll be richer, your relationships will be better.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOf course, there\u2019s a grain of truth in all of that \u2014 I\u2019m not against taking certain steps to make your life more successful,\u201d she continued. \u201cThat\u2019s all fine. But it started wedding with this New Age idea that you are your own god, and that your life is just a journey to dig down to who you really are \u2014 to find that \u2018inner goddess.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Today, self-love is still marketed as a viable answer for young people who desire purpose. Nevertheless, it ultimately fails to deliver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you look at the rates of depression and anxiety among young people, they\u2019re much higher than previous generations. And yet we keep hearing, \u2018It\u2019s because of the self-love deficit. We just need to get young people to love themselves more, to think about themselves more, to focus more on self-care and self-rejuvenation.\u2019 But if the self is the problem, it can\u2019t also be the solution\u2026 I don\u2019t buy the whole premise that we have a self-love deficit in this country. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any indication in society that we lack self-focus. We are endlessly obsessed with ourselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beyond directing young people away from their purpose, self-love robs them of life\u2019s greatest joys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBecause we have bought the lie that self-love is the precipice, that means we\u2019re going to throw aside anything that inconveniences us, anything that we think is going to inhibit our self-love or self-care,\u201d Stuckey elaborated. \u201cYes, there\u2019s a lot of self-sacrifice and a lot of self-emptying that comes with, for example, healthy friendships or hard work. There\u2019s a lot of sacrifice that comes with marriage and that comes with having kids. These also happen to be some of the greatest sources of joy and stability that we can find.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even more so, people must find meaning in an external source \u2014 namely, the Creator of the universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur quest shouldn\u2019t just be to love ourselves more,\u201d said Stuckey. \u201cI\u2019m calling us away from self-focus and self-obsession to look to the God who created us \u2014 who tells us who we are, who sent His Son to die for us and gives us our value that we see through that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cYou have to get some people to be self-resentful\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition to calls for self-love, the Left draws other young people into self-hatred. According to Stuckey, critical race theory, Marxism, and other inherently godless ideologies seek such ends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey try to make some kind of perfect utopia in which everyone is equal in every way,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then finally we will be happy. There won\u2019t be any unfair power dynamics. There won\u2019t be any inequality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn order to get there \u2014 like Ibram X. Kendi says \u2014 \u2018The remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination.\u2019 And in order to do that \u2014 to even the playing field \u2014 you have to get some people to be self-loathing. You have to get some people to be self-resentful and self-flagellating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Critical race theory alleges that white people harbor a unique brand of evil due to the color of their skin; however, the framework also creates self-loathing in black people: \u201cYou are told on one end that you are oppressed and on the other end that you are an oppressor. Neither of those places is desirable. You\u2019re taught not just to hate yourself, but also to hate other people. It\u2019s the exact <\/span><i><span>opposite <\/span><\/i><span>of the direction that we need to be going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stuckey pointed out that some people even turn oppression into a business model: \u201cPeople know that they\u2019re gonna get a pat on the back, they\u2019re gonna get snaps and applause for being the most offended in a group. It\u2019s a race to the bottom\u2026 I think that\u2019s what self-obsession does \u2014 it\u2019s a race to the bottom. It\u2019s trendy narcissism and nothing more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cA state of self-forgetfulness\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Christianity uniquely serves as the antidote for both toxic self-love and merciless self-hatred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo on the one hand, everyone is made in the image of God,\u201d explained Stuckey. \u201cThat, of course, is the foundation of a constitutional republic \u2014 this idea that we were given rights that were endowed to us not by the government, but by an authority greater than the government, our Creator. Therefore, it can\u2019t be arbitrarily given and taken away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd because we were made by this Creator, we were all created equal. In that way, we all have equal worth. We all have equal value. Being made in the <\/span><i><span>imago Dei<\/span><\/i><span> means that every single person on earth is more valuable than any other plant, animal, or creature. We appreciate God\u2019s work in creating our bodies, our minds, and our lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut there\u2019s another layer to that,\u201d said Stuckey. \u201cThe gospel itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe gospel says that you are a sinner. You can\u2019t save yourself. God is holy, He is perfect, and you are not. Because He is holy and you are not holy, you need someone to reconcile you. You need someone to bridge that gap, to build that bridge. And that\u2019s what Jesus Christ did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd so in looking to Him and His sacrifice \u2014 His death and resurrection \u2014 and giving us His righteousness, His perfection, and His holiness so we could be reconciled to God, we see both our depravity and our inability to save ourselves. And so that gets rid of the self-adoration. But we <\/span><i><span>also <\/span><\/i><span>see how much God loved us \u2014 so much that He sent His Son to die for us. That gets rid of the self-loathing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The gospel allows people to move beyond \u201cself-loathing, self-obsession, self-adoration, and self-worship.\u201d Instead, the Christian lives \u201cin a state of self-forgetfulness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean that we\u2019re down on ourselves and things like that. It doesn\u2019t mean that we don\u2019t get our nails done anymore or skip different parts of so-called self-care. It just means that we are relying on Christ for our goodness, for our righteousness, and for our rest and rejuvenation ultimately as the Shepherd of our souls and the strength of our lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cYoung people are hungry for something substantial\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Why is the Left attempting to answer young people\u2019s greatest questions in a way that Christianity \u2014 or, secondarily, conservatism \u2014 is not? Stuckey points to a recent push from the Right to build a movement so broad that it is indistinguishable from the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cA lot of people on the Right say, \u2018We just want to be a big tent party\u2019 \u2014 which means you can do whatever you want to,\u201d said Stuckey. \u201cThere\u2019s no moral framework, there\u2019s no parameters, and we just want the government to be small. We don\u2019t really have a vision of the future \u2014 it\u2019s just kind of \u2018Wild, Wild West\u2019 and whatever we want.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWell, that doesn\u2019t answer life\u2019s questions, which is what people are looking for \u2014 <\/span><i><span>especially <\/span><\/i><span>when they reject God,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd the Left is saying, \u2018You belong in this movement that is bigger than yourself, and we are inspiring you towards a society that is heaven-like.\u2019 Or so they say, because when they depict the future that they want, it sounds like a great vision \u2014 because it\u2019s a cheap version of Christian eschatology, where we know that Christ will rule in perfect peace and sin really will be gone. Well, the Left thinks that they can manifest that themselves through social engineering and government policies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For the young person who rejects religion and still seeks for purpose, the Left begins to seem attractive.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt has a lot of rules. For example, it has a lot of speech codes. It has religious rites. It has sanctification \u2014 doing the work of anti-racism\u2026 There\u2019s a lot of mimicking of Christianity within leftism without some of the unpopular features \u2014 like not having sex until you\u2019re married, or different things that are now controversial. You are free to be as degenerate as you want to be while still following these other religious rites.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf our counter is just \u2018Do whatever you want to, we\u2019re a big-tent party, we don\u2019t know what we want the future to be\u2019 \u2014 I just don\u2019t think that\u2019s attractive to a lot of young people who are hungry for something substantial.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cHave the bravery to ask tough questions\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Many young Americans find themselves in contexts in which leftism is heralded and biblicism is demeaned. Stuckey\u2019s solution? \u201cStart asking questions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf everyone around you thinks the same thing, and you\u2019re seeing it on Snapchat, you\u2019re seeing it on Instagram, you\u2019re seeing it on TikTok and Twitter, and everyone seems to be saying the same thing \u2014 you should start asking: \u2018Why am I only hearing one side of this? Is this really true? Is this data point true? Is it out of context?\u2019 That\u2019s what you need to be relentlessly asking \u2014 whether you\u2019re on the Right or the Left \u2014 \u2018<\/span><i><span>Is this true<\/span><\/i><span>?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Perhaps the most critical question of all: \u201cBy what standard?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you see someone saying \u2018This is good and this is bad\u2019 \u2014 for example, \u2018Abortion is good, pro-lifers are bad, they\u2019re just pro birthers\u2019 \u2014 you need to be asking yourself, \u2018By what standard are these people in my life saying that things are good or bad? What is their standard of goodness? What is their standard of morality?\u2019 Start asking those questions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you\u2019re a Christian, I would encourage you, of course, to be reading your Bible and surrounding yourself with mentors,\u201d advised Stuckey. \u201cYou cannot ask a question \u2014 also about conservatism, but especially about Christianity \u2014 that someone else has not asked or has not wrestled through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe easy thing to do would be to say, \u2018Everyone around me thinks these things. Everyone around me feels the same way. I\u2019m just going to feel that way too, and I\u2019m not going to think about it because it\u2019s too hard. I don\u2019t want to lose my friends, I don\u2019t want to offend people.\u2019 You don\u2019t want to wilt into a little puny person who can\u2019t think for themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s no purpose in life that way,\u201d she added. \u201cI would encourage you to have the bravery to ask tough questions and to dig yourself \u2014 and to not just take what everyone around you is saying or thinking or feeling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cThere will be no sacred space for women\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Young women \u2014 for whom Stuckey wrote her book \u2014 are faced with a world that desires to dilute the uniqueness of femininity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cA few years ago, we were all making fun of feminists for talking about the patriarchy,\u201d Stuckey recalled. \u201cIt\u2019s like, \u2018Where\u2019s the patriarchy? Women are successful. What are you talking about? Women make the same as men.\u2019 Which is true, but that\u2019s almost an outdated argument because now there is an industry that is run by mostly rich white men \u2014 and funded by mostly men \u2014 to push the gender-confused policies that put women at risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Equality Act is a prime example: \u201cThere will be no sacred space for women, and I guess when you deny that there are biological differences between men and women, you don\u2019t think that\u2019s a big deal. But there are differences, which means that women are going to be the victims. Children are going to be the victims.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFor the person who is worried about that \u2014 first of all, I think if you\u2019re a young woman who\u2019s not worried about that, you should be,\u201d said Stuckey. \u201cIt <\/span><i><span>does <\/span><\/i><span>affect you. And even if it doesn\u2019t directly affect you, even if you never have one of those experiences, it affects children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd I think especially as Christians, we\u2019re called to speak up for the voiceless,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd I always say that children are the unconsenting subjects of progressive social experiments. Because they are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou\u2019re not controversial for saying exactly what everyone knew five years ago \u2014 there\u2019s a difference between male and female, and declaration and self-identification does not change that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cWhat worldview do you want your kids to have?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>How should parents disciple their children through the tumults of an increasingly leftist culture? By starting with \u201cvery fundamental things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have to teach our kids stuff that you and I probably didn\u2019t even have to learn. Our parents didn\u2019t have to teach us the difference between a man and a woman. But I also think it\u2019s an exciting opportunity for parents to think through our faith. Why do we believe what we believe about gender, sexuality, abortion, God, creation, our bodies, and the government? Why do we believe these things? We can\u2019t take anything for granted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stuckey noted that everyone \u2014 from Blue\u2019s Clues to the mainstream media \u2014 are seeking to indoctrinate children. \u201cThey\u2019re all pushing a particular narrative about sexuality and gender \u2014 even when it gets down to it, human nature and creation. So if you\u2019re not catechizing your children \u2014 if you\u2019re not \u2018indoctrinating\u2019 your children, teaching your children both what to think and how to think \u2014 then someone else is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey want to cultivate your child\u2019s mind and form your child\u2019s child\u2019s mind in their image \u2014 in the image of progressivism,\u201d she explained. \u201cThey might not call themselves religious, but they are in every sense of the word. They\u2019ve got their own dogmas, they\u2019ve got their own kind of theology and their own worldview.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Though pulling children out of public school is by no means a surefire way to guard against leftism, Stuckey encourages parents to seriously consider it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI understand it\u2019s not feasible for every single person, but it is feasible for a lot more people than they\u2019re willing to admit,\u201d she explained. \u201cThere are a lot of people who aren\u2019t quite willing to admit that really, they just don\u2019t want to make the sacrifice or they don\u2019t want to figure it out. I\u2019ve never heard someone \u2014 <\/span><i><span>ever <\/span><\/i><span>\u2014 I\u2019ve never heard a parent say, \u2018You know, I chose to homeschool my child or I pulled my child out of public school and I really regret it. I really wish they had stayed at public school.\u2019 I\u2019ve talked to plenty of parents who say, \u2018I did not realize that my child was actually learning a worldview at the school that they went to. I thought they were just learning math and science. Little did I know, they were actually learning a worldview that contradicted my own.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd that doesn\u2019t mean that private schools are perfect \u2014 certainly not non-Christian private schools, they\u2019re some of the wokest. You still have to be involved in your child\u2019s life. You have to be the primary faith trainer of your child. No one else is going to do that for you, even at a Christian school.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stuckey noted that neutrality is a myth. \u201cThere is no neutral worldview. Your kids are learning a worldview when they\u2019re watching TV. They\u2019re learning a worldview in the classroom. What worldview do you want your kids to have?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf a parent is reading this, and they haven\u2019t done this yet, all hope is not lost,\u201d Stuckey continued. \u201cAs long as your kid is in your home, you have the opportunity to lay a foundation and a biblical worldview. You don\u2019t have to be an expert theologian and know everything about the Bible. You don\u2019t have to have lived a perfect life. Of course, you want to set an example and character and integrity and godliness for your kids. But if you\u2019re not perfect, that\u2019s okay. Now is the time to humbly start to ask God for wisdom, ask people around you for help, and to start discipling your kids in the Lord and teaching them what to think, how to think, how to dig, how to live out the faith.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat\u2019s what the world needs right now. Godly, intelligent, stable people offering a stable foundation for kids, raising them to be kind, thoughtful, intelligent, and bold.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cSpeak the truth in love\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>What about the child who has already ventured down the road of leftism?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI think the best thing that you can do,\u201d Stuckey explained, \u201cis to speak the truth in love. Be very frank with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cJust say: \u2018Hey, I love you so much. I\u2019m always gonna love you \u2014 no matter what, there\u2019s nothing that you could do to make me stop loving you. I have your best interests at heart and I want what\u2019s best for you. That\u2019s what it means to love you.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c\u2018And here\u2019s what I know about you: I know that you\u2019re my daughter, or I know that you\u2019re my son. I am going to speak about you in accordance with who I know God made you to be. I want you to love your body. I want you to love who you are. I want you to understand that God made you and God loves you, and He has a purpose for you. And I\u2019m going to continue to treat you in that way. That\u2019s how I\u2019m going to live my life. I understand if that offends you. That is not my intention to offend you. But I am responsible to God first \u2014 and He tells me how I\u2019m supposed to love people, which includes telling you the truth.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m not saying that it\u2019s going to work out and their hearts are going to be changed,\u201d Stuckey added. \u201cBut your obligation is first to the Lord, which means it is to truth. And I always think that truth and love are intertwined.
