The claim appears to stem from a website that says it publishes \u201chumor, parody, and satire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rumsfeld, the Defense secretary to former Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush, died on June 29 at 88 years old, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/30\/former-defense-secretary-donald-rumsfeld-dead-at-88.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a>. Now, some social media users are sharing a post claiming Rumsfeld actually died by suicide during a military tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>Rumsfeld did not, however, commit suicide, and was never on trial before a military tribunal. No mention of such a trial or any charges against him can be found in press releases published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/news?keys=Donald+Rumsfeld&amp;items_per_page=25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justice Department<\/a>&nbsp;or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/Newsroom\/releases\/Search\/Rumsfeld\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Defense Department<\/a>. Current Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/secdef\/status\/1410380667163185152\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;on June 30 that he was \u201csaddened to hear\u201d about Rumsfeld\u2019s death, stating, \u201cI extend my deep condolences to his family and loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Had Rumsfeld committed suicide at a military tribunal, media outlets certainly would have reported on it, yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Donald+Rumsfeld+suicide+military+tribunal&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=nws&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwim44vJ8PTxAhW8FVkFHbRMCAgQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&amp;biw=1920&amp;bih=897\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">none have<\/a> done so. Keith Urbahn, Rumsfeld\u2019s spokesperson, said multiple myeloma caused his death, USA Today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/06\/30\/donald-rumsfeld-dies-ex-pentagon-chief-iraq-afghanistan-wars\/7810730002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/01\/26\/fact-check-article-defense-secretary-lloyd-austin-defunding-disbanding-army\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Viral Image Claims To Show Article About Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin Considering \u2018Defunding, Maybe Disbanding\u2019 The US Army)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The claim appears to stem from a July 18 <a href=\"https:\/\/realrawnews.com\/2021\/07\/rumsfeld-committed-suicide-at-military-tribunal-did-not-die-of-natural-causes\/\">article<\/a> published by Real Raw News bearing the headline: \u201cRumsfeld Committed Suicide at Military Tribunal; Did Not Die of Natural Causes.\u201d The article goes on to claim Rumsfeld was arrested on May 27, and that he killed himself after the military tribunal found him responsible for the deaths of American soldiers during the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.<\/p>\n<p>Real Raw News includes a Disclaimer on it\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/realrawnews.com\/about-us\/\">About Us<\/a>\u201d page that states, \u201cThis website contains humor, parody, and satire.\u201d Despite the Disclaimer, social media users have shared the claim without such a warning, seemingly believing it to be true.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time a claim stemming from a Real Raw News article has been shared as misinformation.
