Marco Rubio (R-FL) took to the Senate floor on Tuesday to debunk false narratives surrounding the Cuban embargo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The lawmaker \u2014 who is Cuban-American \u2014 has been among the most vocal supporters of recent anti-communism protests in the island nation. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-rubio-gives-impassioned-speech-about-cuba-protests-on-senate-floor\"><span>The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span> reported, Rubio delivered another speech on July 12 to explain the factors leading to the protests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As The Daily Wire has also reported, progressives \u2014 such as Rep. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrat-ocasio-cortez-continues-to-demonize-blame-the-u-s-for-suffering-on-cuba\"><span>Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/span><\/a><span> (D-NY) and the leadership of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cuban-artist-slams-blm-all-black-lives-matter-except-cuban-black-lives\"><span>Black Lives Matter<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 point to the American embargo as the cause of economic hardship in Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rubio emphatically disagrees. On Tuesday afternoon, he asserted that American embargo policy is targeted at the Cuban regime \u2014 not the Cuban people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rubio on Senate Floor: Cubans Aren&#039;t Protesting Because of an Embargo - They Want Liberty\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hshdHSO-n1s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe White House, after having some sort of meeting or conference call, came out and said that they\u2019re going to be looking at remittances \u2014 increasing and making it easier to get money to relatives in Cuba,\u201d Rubio explained to his Senate colleagues. \u201cThe people in charge of Cuba policy at the White House \u2014 at the National Security Council and at the State Department \u2014 the people in charge of Cuba policy have long been advocates for dialogue with the regime and an economic opening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rubio noted that \u201cthere are no American ships blockading Cuba.\u201d Indeed, \u201cCuba trades with the whole world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He explained that Cuba imports $5.3 billion annually from Spain, Italy, China, Canada, Russia, and other nations. Meanwhile, Cubans import food products \u2014 such as chicken and soybean \u2014 from the United States.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis regime trades with virtually every country on the planet\u2026 There\u2019s only one blockade in Cuba. And it is the blockade that this regime has imposed on its people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With respect to remittances, for instance, Rubio observed that there are no legal barriers for Americans to send money to their relatives \u2014 with the exception of a ban on using a Cuban bank in Panama run by the Cuban military, through which the regime requires all foreign remittances to flow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHere\u2019s how it works for them. You send your relative $100. They take 10% of it. Then they take the dollars \u2014 they don\u2019t let them deposit it \u2014 they pocket the dollars and they give them this worthless Cuban currency. [The regime keeps] the dollars so they can buy things for themselves on the global market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe blockade \u2014 to the extent that there\u2019s something that\u2019s preventing remittances directly to the Cuban people \u2014 it\u2019s not U.S. policy,\u201d Rubio added. \u201cIt\u2019s regime policy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Likewise, Rubio explained that Americans can presently travel to Cuba \u2014 as long as they do not eat at government-run restaurants, stay at government-run hotels, or shop at government-run stores. However, the regime blocks all private tourism.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The same is true for other economic activities. American citizens and businesses can legally donate medicine and establish internet networks \u2014 both of which are normally disallowed by the Cuban government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou see a pattern here?\u201d asked Rubio. \u201cBlockade on travel. Blockade on private ownership of business. Blockade on bringing in medicine. Blockade on bringing in money. Why? Because the Cuban regime wants to control people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey don\u2019t want individual Cubans to have a paycheck that they earn for themselves,\u201d Rubio continued. \u201cThey want what little you have to come from them \u2014 because if you don\u2019t do what they tell you, they can take it from you. That\u2019s what they want\u2026 They don\u2019t want the people of Cuba to have liberty. This is all about control.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to Rubio, the American embargo automatically ends once three conditions are met: \u201cFree the political prisoners, free press, free and fair elections.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo the bottom line is this,\u201d Rubio concluded. \u201cAnyone who stands up and says, \u2018There\u2019s an embargo, there\u2019s a blockade by the United States, and it\u2019s cruel, and it\u2019s causing all of these problems\u2019 is one of two things: They don\u2019t know what they\u2019re talking about and they\u2019re just parroting some talking point, or they\u2019re liars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
