Rand Paul said Tuesday he would send a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) requesting a criminal referral of White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kicked off your questioning of Dr. Fauci emphasizing federal law makes lying to Congress, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Is it your belief based on the evidence, senator, that he lied before Congress and broke the law?,\u201d Fox News host Sean Hannity, on whose show Paul appeared Tuesday, asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, and I will be sending a letter to the Department of Justice asking for a criminal referral because he has lied to Congress,\u201d Paul replied.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"6.8982035928144\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Rand Paul says he will be sending a criminal referral letter to the DOJ about Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/B17FZCAVoW\">pic.twitter.com\/B17FZCAVoW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Post Millennial (@TPostMillennial) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPostMillennial\/status\/1417655593305837572?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 21, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul had <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/20\/rand-paul-clashes-fauci-tense-capitol-hill-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accused Fauci<\/a> of lying about <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/12\/china-wuhan-covid-19-coronavirus-gain-of-function-research-lab-leak-nih\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gain-of-function research<\/a> funding during a Capitol Hill hearing earlier the same day.<\/p>\n<p>The senator had an intense exchange with Fauci, where he cited a <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plospathogens\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.ppat.1006698\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017 paper<\/a>, in which chief scientist of the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIH) Dr. Shi Zhengli <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RandPaul\/status\/1417506038471876609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thanked<\/a> the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for providing funding for the research. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/16\/house-committee-votes-wuhan-lab-gain-of-function-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: House Committee Votes To Defund Wuhan Lab, Gain-Of-Function Research In Adversarial Countries)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Tuesday Capitol Hill hearing also saw Paul claim that Fauci had provided a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/11\/fauci-denies-funding-gain-of-function-wuhan-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">false testimony<\/a> before the Senate in a May 11 hearing by denying NIH\u2019s funding of the gain-of-function research undertaken in Wuhan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSen. Paul, I have never lied before the Congress and I do not retract that statement,\u201d Fauci replied, noting that \u201cqualified\u201d people had determined the scientists\u2019 actions did not meet the definition of gain-of-function.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou take an animal virus and you increase transmissibility to human, you\u2019re saying that is not gain-of-function?,\u201d Paul objected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSen. Paul, you do not know what you are talking about, quite frankly and I want to say that officially.
