Rand Paul clashed with Dr. Anthony Fauci in a Capitol Hill hearing, accusing him of lying about gain-of-function research funding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/21\/rand-paul-study-vaccines-neutralize-covid-variants-anthony-fauci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul<\/a> questioned Fauci during Tuesday\u2019s hearing and immediately framed his line of attack by reminding Fauci that it was a crime to lie to Congress \u2013 and the exchange only got more heated from there. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/23\/rand-paul-dr-fauci-experts-give-evidence-post-vaccine-mask-edicts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED:&nbsp;\u2018Dr. Fauci Needs To Put Up Or Shut Up\u2019: Rand Paul Says Experts Need To Give Evidence For Post-Vaccine Mask Edicts)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fauci, as you are aware, it is a crime to lie to Congress,\u201d Paul began, noting that such a crime was a felony that could carry a five-year sentence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/18\/sen-rand-paul-dr-fauci-masks-after-vaccination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul<\/a> went on to say that <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/11\/fauci-denies-funding-gain-of-function-wuhan-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fauci<\/a> had previously denied that any NIH funding had gone toward <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/12\/china-wuhan-covid-19-coronavirus-gain-of-function-research-lab-leak-nih\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gain-of-function research<\/a> like that which was reportedly done at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViruses that in nature only infect animals were manipulated in the Wuhan lab to gain the function of infecting humans. This research fits the definition of the research the NIH said was subject to the pause in 2014 to 2017, a pause in funding on gain of function. But the NIH failed to recognize this, defines it away, and it never came under any scrutiny,\u201d Paul continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fauci, knowing it is a crime to lie to Congress, do you wish retract your statement?\u201d he asked, arguing that NIH funding had, in fact, been used to support such research.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"8.1067961165049\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Yes, Dr. Fauci\u2019s NIH did fund the Wuhan Virology Lab. Paul, I have never lied before the Congress and I do not retract that statement,\u201d Fauci replied, saying that \u201cqualified\u201d people had determined it did not meet the definition of gain-of-function.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou take an animal virus and you increase transmissibility to human, you\u2019re saying that is not gain of function,\u201d Paul protested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSen. Paul, you do not know what you are taking about, quite frankly and I want to say that officially. You do not know what you are talking about,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>Paul pushed back again, arguing that it did meet the definition written by the NIH.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a dance, and you\u2019re dancing around this because you\u2019re trying to obscure responsibility for four million people dying around the world from a pandemic,\u201d Paul replied.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to quote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/biosafety-expert-explains-why-faucis-nih-gain-of-function-testimony-was-demonstrably-false\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Richard Ebright<\/a>, a molecular biologist from Rutgers, who said, \u201cThe Wuhan lab used NIH funding to construct novel chimeric SARS-related coronaviruses able to infect human cells and laboratory animals.&nbsp; \u2026This is high-risk research that creates new potential pandemic pathogens (i.e., potential pandemic pathogens that exist only in a lab, not in nature). This research matches \u2014 indeed epitomizes \u2014 the definition of \u2018gain of function research of concern\u2019 for which federal funding was \u2018paused\u2019 in 2014-2017.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI totally resent the lie that you are now propagating, Senator,\u201d Fauci shot back, arguing \u2014 as have a number of other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2021\/05\/the-wuhan-lab-and-the-gain-of-function-disagreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experts<\/a> \u2014 that it was impossible for the viruses in that lab to be manipulated into what was eventually named SARS-COV2. University of Iowa professor Dr. Stanley Perlman argued that the research in Wuhan did not represent \u201cintentional gain of function.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re animal viruses that became more transmissible in humans and you funded it,\u201d Paul said again as his time expired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you are implying that what we did was responsible for the deaths of individual \u2014 I totally resent that,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could have been,\u201d Paul continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anybody\u2019s lying here, Senator, it is you,\u201d Fauci shot back.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Minnesota Tina Smith took the floor then, and began her time by offering Fauci one more chance to rebut Paul\u2019s accusations against \u201cattacks on his integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator, thank you. I don\u2019t have anything further to say. This is a pattern that Sen. Paul has been doing now at multiple hearings based on no reality,\u201d Fauci said. \u201cI have not lied. Case closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/04\/nih-gain-of-function-anthony-fauci-review-board-wuhan-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">grant in question<\/a> was reportedly awarded not directly by the NIH but through a third party, the EcoHealth Alliance, resulting in that particular grant not being reviewed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phe.gov\/s3\/dualuse\/documents\/p3co.pdf\">Potential Pandemic Pathogens Control and Oversight<\/a> (P3CO) Framework within the Department of Health and Human Services. NIAID, which is led by Fauci, funded EcoHealth Alliance to study bat-based coronaviruses in China that included the transfer of $600,000 to the WIV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter careful review of the grant, NIAID determined research in the grant was not gain-of-function research because it did not involve the enhancement of the pathogenicity or transmissibility of the viruses studied,\u201d an NIH spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Some experts say the NIH grant describes scientists conducting gain-of-function research, a risky area of study that, in this case, made SARS-like viruses even more contagious.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/article\/2021\/may\/11\/united-facts-america-fauci-disputes-sen-rand-paul-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fauci<\/a> has&nbsp;referred to the EcoHealth Alliance\u2019s contributions in Wuhan as \u201ca very minor collaboration as part of a subcontract of a grant,\u201d adding, \u201cWe had a collaboration with some Chinese scientists \u2026 He conflated that \u2026 therefore we were involved in creating the virus, which is the most ridiculous, majestic leap I\u2019ve ever heard of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci and Paul have clashed on a number of occasions on both this specific issue and others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Kentucky Sen.
