A solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves between the sun and the earth and blocks the sun\u2019s light, casting a shadow on earth, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/audience\/forstudents\/k-4\/stories\/nasa-knows\/what-is-an-eclipse-k4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/03\/17\/fact-check-first-ever-photo-sunset-mars-illustration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Is This Image The \u2018First Ever\u2019 Photo Of A Sunset On Mars?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the picture does contain some actual imagery of space, it is not a photo of a solar eclipse taken from the International Space Station. Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact discovered it is actually a piece of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/a4size-ska\/art\/Eclipse-144235675\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital artwork<\/a> created by Deviant Art user A4size-ska using software called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetside.co.uk\/downloads\/tg2deep\/dru9uwepuxu3haka\/Terragen2Deep25050.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terragen 2<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/images\/eso0932a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">image of the Milky Way<\/a> in the background of the piece comes from the European Space Observatory.<\/p>\n<p>The inaccurate claim that the image shows a solar eclipse \u201cviewed from the International Space Station\u201d has circulated online since at least 2012. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovermagazine.com\/the-sciences\/a-fake-and-a-real-view-of-the-solar-eclipse-from-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> for Discover Magazine that year, astronomer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syfy.com\/author\/phil-plait\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Plait<\/a> debunked the claim, noting that \u201cthe bright Earth (and Sun!) would wash out the background stars in a picture like this, so you\u2019d not see them, and certainly not the Milky Way.\u201d Gizmodo <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/this-mind-blowing-image-of-the-eclipse-cant-possibly-be-5912184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also reported<\/a> that the image was a \u201c3D rendering made in Terragen 2\u201d by the Deviant Art user.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time social media users have mistaken a piece of digital artwork as a genuine photo taken of space.
