The vaccine mandate will stay while the case is decided, leaving the requirement in place for more than 100,000 students, faculty and staff at the university for the fall 2021 semester, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/563691-federal-judge-will-not-block-indiana-universitys-vaccine-mandate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>People can opt-out for religious and medical exemptions,&nbsp;according to court documents. However, students who aren\u2019t vaccinated face new rules such as mask requirements, frequent COVID-19 testing and physical distancing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Fourteenth Amendment permits Indiana University to pursue a reasonable and due process of vaccination in the legitimate interest of public health for its students, faculty, and staff,\u201d Leichty wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court isn\u2019t saying a student doesn\u2019t have the right to choose,\u201d Leichty wrote. \u201cOf course every individual does \u2014 subject to the state\u2019s reasonable measures designed to pursue legitimate ends of disease control or eradication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leichty said there\u2019s no constitutional right to a college education and that students have multiple options for colleges if they don\u2019t like Indiana University\u2019s rules, according to court documents. \u201cTaking the vaccine, applying for a religious exemption, applying for a medical exemption, applying for a medical deferral, taking a semester off, or attending another university or online\u201d are all options students can take if they don\u2019t like the mandate, Leichty said.<\/p>\n<p>Republican State Attorney General Todd Rokita in May criticized the school\u2019s initial policies, saying it went against state law because students are required to submit proof of vaccination, according to The Hill. Indiana state or local governments can\u2019t require a person to show proof of vaccination before entering a public event or venue, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/legislation\/fulltext.asp?DocName=&amp;SessionId=110&amp;GA=102&amp;DocTypeId=HB&amp;DocNum=4081&amp;GAID=16&amp;LegID=136216&amp;SpecSess=&amp;Session=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">law<\/a> states.<\/p>\n<p>However, Rokita also said there is no law prohibiting vaccine mandates at the school.<\/p>\n<p>The university later reversed the requirement to show proof after state lawmakers passed a ban on \u201cvaccine passports\u201d in May according to <a href=\"https:\/\/wgntv.com\/news\/what-does-indianas-new-vaccine-passport-law-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WGN9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"9.4494773519164\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">IU has updated its vaccine verification and exemption process.
