In an interview on Friday, the Olympian said her protest of the National Anthem after placing third at the trials last month was misunderstood.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, some Republicans have called for Berry\u2019s removal from the team. However, Berry responded claiming it is very American to protest the country and that she is only protesting what she sees as unfair treatment of non-white Americans.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;In order for me to respect a song that sings about liberty and justice for us all, I have to actually see that.&#8221; Olympic athlete Gwen Berry (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MzBerryThrows?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MzBerryThrows<\/a>) on why sports is an effective forum to advocate for social change <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TIME100Talks?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TIME100Talks<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MFgP7zdSG0\">pic.twitter.com\/MFgP7zdSG0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TIME (@TIME) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TIME\/status\/1416091929352286216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI just don\u2019t respect something that doesn\u2019t stand for all people, especially minorities in America,\u201d said Berry. \u201cI feel like we know the story\u2026Blacks get the worst treatment here. We are not treated as human beings, our lives are not regarded. They\u2019re not precious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berry also said she believes the International Olympic Committee is in violation of her human rights by not letting her protest on the podium during the games.
