Under this scenario, employment demand increases by 430,000 this year from actual employment of 7,829,000 in 2020. A higher growth rate scenario could boost the number of additional construction workers needed in 2021 to nearly 1 million.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>In the three months since the Associated Builders and Contractors\u2019 release, record demand for homes has only accelerated. A recent analysis from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/report-average-home-is-staying-on-the-market-for-only-6-days\"><span>Zillow<\/span><\/a><span> found that the average house is only remaining on the market for an average of six days. In some cities \u2014 such as Cincinnati, Columbus, and Kansas City \u2014 the average is three days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The value of the typical American home has therefore <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/how-the-government-is-distorting-the-housing-market\"><span>grown<\/span><\/a><span> by 13.2% since May 2020. Between the first quarters of 2020 and 2021, homeowners observed a collective equity gain of $2 trillion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the supply side, construction of new long-term housing has slowed over the past several decades. High costs for lumber and other raw materials are adding nearly $36,000 to the price of an average new single-family home. On the demand side, Americans are moving from cities to the suburbs \u2014 in large part because of COVID-19 lockdowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, the supply of workers is presently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/report-labor-market-healthiest-in-red-states-suffering-in-blue-states\"><span>low<\/span><\/a><span> due to enhanced federal unemployment handouts, which is discouraging workers \u2014 particularly in Democrat-run states that have not opted out of the payments \u2014 from finding jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Small businessowners in the construction industry are feeling the impact of unprecedented demand; however, their operations are bottlenecked by the worker shortage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Matthew Messer \u2014 the owner of New York Solar Maintenance in Long Island, New York \u2014 told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/08\/economy\/construction-worker-shortage\/index.html\"><span>CNN Business<\/span><\/a><span> that he is forced to work alongside his construction staff due to the lack of available labor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe phone is ringing off the hook. I am expanding as quickly as I can, but right now that\u2019s governed by the amount of skilled technicians I can bring on,\u201d Messer explained to the outlet. \u201cI was offering $18-$22 an hour and I got no applications. I increased it to $23 and I got none. I increased it to $25 and they\u2019re starting to trickle in right now.
