It has worked closely with Bite Club, a support group for survivors to inform its language.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cNSW DPI is respectful that each incident is best described by the individual involved,\u201d a spokeswoman said, per the outlet. \u201cDPI generally refers to \u2018incidents\u2019 or \u2018interactions\u2019 in our formal shark reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The outlet also noted that researchers said that shark interactions were locally named \u201cshark accidents\u201d prior to the 1930s when a well-known surgeon, Victor Coppleson, started calling them \u201cattacks.\u201d \u201cShark nets also began to be introduced on city beaches,\u201d the outlet added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Leonardo Guida, a shark researcher at the Australian Marine Conservation Society,&nbsp;said that a shift in the wording matters \u201cbecause it helps dispel inherent assumptions that sharks are ravenous, mindless man-eating monsters.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Dr. Guida added that people could distinguish between dog attacks and dog bites. Guida noted that not using the word \u201cattacks\u201d in reporting shark interactions \u201chelps improve the public\u2019s understanding of sharks and how they behave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Dr. Pepin-Neff of the university of Sydney added that the change in language \u201chas been coming for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201c\u2018Shark attack\u2019 is a lie,\u201d he noted, pressing that over one-third of interactions resulted in no wound.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He added that over a third of interactions leave no wound. \u201cMany others include minor bites from small sharks \u2013 such as people stepping on wobbegongs [(bottom-dwelling sharks)] \u2013 that would not have been a predatory action on the part of the animal,\u201d the outlet added.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cFor its part, Queensland\u2019s Department of Agriculture and Fisheries said there had \u2018been no formal direction in this space and some people may just have a personal preference for the language they use.\u2019 In Victoria, fisheries describe the encounters on its Shark Smart advice only as \u2018attacks,&#8217;\u201d the outlet added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The outlet noted that the wording can also be essential in case terms \u201csuch as \u2018attacks\u2019 prompt people to demand culls of what are already often protected animals.
