After the round, DeChambeau chose not to put the onus on himself to improve but instead chose to blame his driver for his inability to hit a fairway.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf I can hit it down the middle of the fairway, that\u2019s great, but with the driver right now \u2026 the driver sucks,\u201d DeChambeau <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/07\/15\/bryson-dechambeau-already-regrets-attack-on-cobra\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s not a good face for me, and we\u2019re still trying to figure out how to make it good on the mishits. I\u2019m living on the razor\u2019s edge like I\u2019ve told people for a long time. When I did get it outside of the fairway, like in the first cut and whatnot, I catch jumpers out of there and I couldn\u2019t control my wedges.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"4.7123287671233\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The driver SUCKS&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No holding back from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/b_dechambeau?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@b_dechambeau<\/a> on his golf today at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TheOpen?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TheOpen<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/T39wWG17wb\">pic.twitter.com\/T39wWG17wb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Open (@TheOpen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheOpen\/status\/1415699970276139010?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 15, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>DeChambeau was only able to hit 4 of 14 fairways in his first round and bogeyed two of his last four holes to finish the round.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s quite finicky for me because it\u2019s a golf course that\u2019s pretty short, and so when I hit driver and it doesn\u2019t go in the fairway, it\u2019s first cut or whatever, or it\u2019s in the hay, it\u2019s tough for me to get it out on to the green and control that,\u201d DeChambeau said.&nbsp; \u201cIt\u2019s kind of living on the razor\u2019s edge, and if I can\u2019t figure it out.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s literally the physics and the way that they build [club] heads now. It\u2019s not the right design, unfortunately, and we\u2019ve been trying to fix it [with no] results yet.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Understandably, his comments touched a nerve with the manufacturer of DeChambeau\u2019s driver \u2014 Cobra Golf.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>DeChambeau\u2019s driver is made specifically for him, it\u2019s not a club that the casual golfer has access to. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/golfweek.usatoday.com\/2021\/07\/15\/bryson-dechambeau-british-open-cobra-driver-sucks\/\">Golfweek<\/a>, he\u2019s using a Cobra Radspeed driver, which is 46 inches long with 5 degrees of loft.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ben Schomin is Cobra\u2019s tour operations manager and also filled in as DeChambeau\u2019s caddie two weeks ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic after DeChambeau parted ways with his longtime caddie, Tim Tucker.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Schomin was not pleased that DeChambeau publicly disparaged the driver.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEverybody is bending over backwards. We\u2019ve got multiple guys in R&amp;D who are CAD\u2019ing (computer-aided design) this and CAD-ing that, trying to get this and that into the pipeline faster. (Bryson) knows it,\u201d Schomin <a href=\"https:\/\/golfweek.usatoday.com\/2021\/07\/15\/bryson-dechambeau-british-open-cobra-driver-sucks\/\">told<\/a> Golfweek. \u201cIt\u2019s just really, really painful when he says something that stupid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe has never really been happy, ever. Like, it\u2019s very rare where he\u2019s happy,\u201d Schomin continued. \u201cNow he\u2019s in a place where he\u2019s swinging a 5-degree driver with 200 mph of ball speed. Everybody is looking for a magic bullet. Well, the magic bullet becomes harder and harder to find the faster you swing and the lower your loft gets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One of the issues for DeChambeau and Cobra is that DeChambeau is attempting to change the game of golf. He swings faster than anyone on the tour, making it difficult for Cobra to acquire the data necessary to figure out how the driver reacts to his swing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo when he\u2019s talking about the razor\u2019s edge, we\u2019re not going to be able to help that,\u201d Schomin said. \u201cAt DeChambeau\u2019s speeds, every shortcoming in his swing or mis-hit is exponentially magnified.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to stay ahead of it, so we\u2019ll place an order for 10 prototype heads and then, literally as soon as that order is placed, usually within a week or two, we might be ordering more of something else,\u201d Schomin said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To his credit, <\/span><span>DeChambeau did apologize for his comments in a post to Instagram.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><i><span>The comment I made in my post round interview today was very unprofessional. My frustration and emotions over the way I drove the ball today boiled over. I sucked today, not my equipment. Cobra and I have worked together for over five years and they are some of the hardest working people in golf industry and make an incredible product. Their team is like family to me, especially Ben Schomin who has been there for me every step of the way since I started my career. I deeply regret the words I used earlier. I am relentless in pursuit of improvement and perfection. Part of that causes me to become outwardly frustrated at times. With the new speeds I am obtaining, my game is a constant work in progress and so is controlling my emotions<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CRXQY0zrwZe\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"13\" readability=\"0\"><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s like an 8-year-old that gets mad at you,\u201d Schomin said. \u201cThey might fly off the handle and say, \u2018I hate you.\u2019 But then you go. \u2018Whoa, no you don\u2019t.\u2019 We know as adults that they really don\u2019t mean that and I know that if I got him cornered right now and said, \u2018What the hell did you say that for,\u2019 he would say that he was mad. He didn\u2019t really mean to say it that harshly.
