The officer, who accused [the teen] of allegedly \u2018smirking\u2019 at him \u2018in an intimidating manner,\u2019 arrested her,\u201d per The Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cDue to the demeanor displayed by Gibson in attempts to intimate law enforcement while destroying a \u2018Pro Law Enforcement\u2019 sign the allegations are being treated as a \u2018Hate Crime\u2019 enhanced allegation,\u201d Carter wrote in his affidavit. The misdemeanor could reportedly lead to a maximum one-year sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [\u2018criminal mischief\u2019 with a hate-crime enhancement] crime, county prosecutors allege, was committed with \u2018the intent to intimidate or terrorize another person\u2019 in violation of Utah\u2019s 2019 hate-crime law,\u201d per The Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The Hill <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/562932-teen-who-allegedly-crumpled-up-blue-lives-matter-sign-charged-with-hate\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Utah released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acluutah.org\/newsroom\/in-the-media\/item\/1719-backtheblue-hatecrimes-garfieldcounty\">statement<\/a> about the matter. The group said it was \u201ctroubled and disappointed\u201d about the \u201cdecision of the Garfield County Attorney\u2019s office to add a hate crime enhancement to charges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The statement went on, \u201cThis kind of charging decision sends an extremely chilling message to the community that the government will seek harsher punishment for people charged with crimes who disagree with police actions. This concern is even greater because we do not view the enhancement as supportable under the language of the statute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The group added, \u201c<span class=\"s2\">We consistently warn<\/span>&nbsp;that enhancements are oftentimes used to single out unpopular groups or messages rather than provide protections for marginalized communities. This case has confirmed those warnings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The teen conducted an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/how-a-19-year-old-got-charged-with-a-hate-crime-for-teasing-a-cop\"><span class=\"s1\">interview<\/span><\/a> with The Daily Beast, which explained her side of the story.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201c[She] was in a caravan of friends heading from their camping spot in Panguitch,&nbsp;<span class=\"s1\">Utah<\/span>, back to&nbsp;<span class=\"s1\">California<\/span>&nbsp;last week when one of the cars was pulled over for&nbsp;<span class=\"s1\">speeding<\/span>. The stop took place near a gas station in the small town of less than 2,000 people,\u201d The Daily Beast reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The teen \u201csaid the Garfield County Sheriff\u2019s Deputy who pulled over her friend\u2019s car was aggressive and eventually wrote her friend a ticket for speeding. After watching the interaction, she said, she was upset and picked up a rusted \u2018Back the Blue\u2019 sign that she said her friends had found on the side of the road and kept in one of the cars,\u201d per the outlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI don\u2019t feel like I did anything wrong,\u201d she said, noting to the outlet that she doesn\u2019t consider herself to be \u201canti-police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cIf it was a dentist\u2019s sign or something and I just crushed a dentist sign or something in front of them, like, nothing would have happened,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s the same thing. it\u2019s just an occupation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Per the legal background, The Beast noted, \u201cWhile the model hate-crime statute that the ADL drafted for Utah was meant to protect victims of certain races, religion, or sexual orientations, [Seth Brysk, a Utah regional director with the Anti-Defamation League] said the version that eventually passed in Utah also applies that protected status to law-enforcement officers. Louisiana passed a similar addition to their hate crime statute in 2016, at a time when, as now, protests against police violence were visible in the state and nationally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The outlet added that a similar incident occurred last year in Utah involving a hate crime charge against a 32-year-old man who defaced a \u201cBack the Blue\u201d sign.<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old claimed that \u201cshe started to glean the gist about [the previous] case from the deputy who arrested her last week,\u201d per The Beast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me, \u2018Do you want to know what happened to the last person that got arrested for this?\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cHe was kind of threatening me in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/wset.com\/news\/coronavirus\/honoring-the-fallen-police-officers-killed-in-the-line-of-duty\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> by ABC 13 News, there was a sharp increase in police officers who were killed in the line of duty last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cA staggering 264 police officers were killed in the line of duty in 2020 representing a 96% increase compared to the previous year, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund,\u201d the outlet noted, although the Fund\u2019s report includes deaths from COVID-19 in the category of \u201cother\u201d reasons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
