Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found similar photos featured in an April 2019 article published by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/shanghai.ist\/2019\/04\/25\/hundreds-of-electric-cars-rust-away-at-shared-car-graveyard-in-hangzhou\/\">Shanghaiist<\/a> with the headline: \u201cLOOK: Hundreds of electric cars rust away at \u2018shared car graveyard\u2019 in Hangzhou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The article explained the cars belonged to <a href=\"https:\/\/shanghai.ist\/2019\/04\/25\/hundreds-of-electric-cars-rust-away-at-shared-car-graveyard-in-hangzhou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microcity<\/a>, a Chinese electric car rental company. Microcity reportedly claimed the cars were still in use despite users saying they were unable to locate nearby vehicles through the app, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210708143817\/https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/abacus\/tech\/article\/3029238\/thousands-shared-electric-cars-seen-discarded-hangzhou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abacus<\/a> reported in March 2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2019\/09\/06\/fact-check-ocasio-cortez-tweet-electric-cars-hurricane-dorian\/\">(RELATED: Did Ocasio-Cortez Tweet About Electric Cars During Hurricane Dorian?)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The same images were shared on the Chinese news website&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.163.com\/photoview\/00AP0001\/2301292.html?from=ph_ss#p=EDJQ3DBU00AP0001NOS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NetEase News<\/a>&nbsp;with captions that also identify the location as Hangzhou, China. Several landmarks in these photos match with those found in the image shared on Facebook, confirming the locations are the same.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of ride-sharing companies, including Microcity, opened in China in the late 2010s, a phenomenon driven in part by popularity of the industry and the abundance of electric vehicles in China, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210708143817\/https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/abacus\/tech\/article\/3029238\/thousands-shared-electric-cars-seen-discarded-hangzhou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abacus<\/a>. Many of these companies faced economic hardship in the following years, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/michael.sirmon.14\/posts\/10226449247480924\">similar<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thebeachgeek\/posts\/10159420045734736\">photo<\/a> showing a field of cars in France previously circulated on Facebook, claiming the cars had been abandoned due to their batteries no longer working. Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/factcheck-electric-cars-france\/fact-check-electric-cars-taken-off-french-roads-due-to-contract-termination-not-battery-fault-idUSL2N2N60XA\">debunked<\/a> the claim, saying the abandoned car lot was due to a company\u2019s contract ending, not faulty batteries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An image shared on Facebook over 2,800 times purportedly shows an \u201celectric car cemetery\u201d in France.Verdict: Misleading The image shows abandoned electric cars in China, not France.
