Larry Hogan from ending federal unemployment benefits, citing public interest.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimorecitycourt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/D.A.-v.-Hogan.-Preliminary-Injunction.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">preliminary injunction<\/a> was issued Tuesday by Judge Lawrence P. Fletcher-Hill of the Circuit Court for Baltimore following multiple lawsuits against the governor after he announced in early June that he will end all federal unemployment benefits due to slow economic recovery and worker shortage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a critical problem where businesses across our state are trying to hire more people, but many are facing severe worker shortages,\u201d Hogan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/11\/four-states-slash-covid-19-unemployment-aid-saturday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said at the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his ruling, the judge said that the plaintiffs \u201chave shown that they will suffer irreparable harm\u201d if the injunction was not issued and that it was in public interest for him to take action. Robinson, \u201cshall take all necessary steps\u201d to refrain from taking action against the unemployment benefits, the ruling also reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled with the Court\u2019s ruling, which the Governor\u2019s office has decided not to contest. The Judge understood the arguments and understood that this was about what Maryland\u2019s Unemployment Insurance law requires,\u201d the plaintiffs said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicjustice.org\/en\/news\/maryland-must-continue-federal-unemployment-benefits-judge-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/17\/louisiana-john-bel-edwards-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Multiple states<\/a>, many of them Republican, have decided to end the federal enhanced unemployment benefits to incentivize people to go back to work following nationwide worker shortages. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/08\/jobless-claims-united-states-economy-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Jobless Claims Increase To 373,000, Above Economists\u2019 Predictions)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/11\/jared-bernstein-joe-biden-unemployment-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has been opposed<\/a> to states ending the benefits early but White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/04\/joe-biden-jobs-report-unemployment-benefits-jen-psaki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently stressed<\/a> that they have have \u201cevery right to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The federal unemployment assistance consists of an additional $300 on top of state unemployment benefits, as well as assistance for self-employed and gig workers. The federal benefits are scheduled to expire September 6 in all fifty states, meaning the final ruling on the case might come well after the assistance is no longer available.<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s office disagreed with the decision. \u201cWe fundamentally disagree with today\u2019s decision. This lawsuit is hurting our small businesses, jeopardizing our economic recovery, and will cause significant job loss,\u201d the office said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5dc.com\/news\/maryland-unemployment-ruling-expected-today\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> provided to FOX 5. \u201cMost states have already ended enhanced benefits, and the White House and the US Department of Labor have affirmed that states have every right to do so.
