Special elections in Louisiana and New Mexico saw low-profile moderates prevail over progressive challengers, despite the districts encompassing New Orleans and Albuquerque, each state\u2019s largest city, respectively.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Adams\u2019 win in America\u2019s largest city suggests that candidates do not necessarily need to adopt sweeping points like \u201cdefund the police\u201d or employ extensive social media operations to necessarily win liberal, or even progressive, voters: \u201cSocial media does not pick a candidate,\u201d Adams said June 22. \u201cPeople on social security pick a candidate.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eric Adams became the latest moderate Democrat to triumph among a field of far more liberal candidates, pointing to a recent trend of the party\u2019s most reliable voters bucking progressives for those holding more centrist views despite their lower profile.<\/p>\n<p>Adams, the Brooklyn Borough President and a former NYPD officer, centered his campaign around lowering the city\u2019s rising crime rate and improving \u2014 not defunding \u2014 its police department. His message led him to win every borough except Manhattan, the wealthiest of the city\u2019s five, even as he had exponentially fewer Twitter followers than some of his rivals and the prominent progressives who endorsed them.<\/p>\n<p>Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/06\/eric-adams-kathryn-garcia-new-york-city-mayoral-race-absentee-ballots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won the Democratic primary<\/a> with just over 50% of the vote after the ranked choice voting process concluded, but was ranked third on over 30% of ballots among the eight-candidate field. Maya Wiley, the leading progressive candidate in New York City\u2019s mayoral race, ultimately finished third.<\/p>\n<p>His win follows moderate victories in Democratic congressional and gubernatorial primaries across the country. Special elections in <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/02\/democrats-win-new-mexico-special-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Louisiana<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/02\/democrats-win-new-mexico-special-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Mexico<\/a> saw low-profile, pragmatic moderates prevail over progressive challengers and Republicans alike, despite the districts encompassing New Orleans and Albuquerque, each state\u2019s largest city, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In Virginia, former establishment Gov. (JIM WATSON\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Many moderate Democrats in Congress attributed Republicans\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/12\/republicans-won-trump-failed-outperform\/\">unexpected gains<\/a> in the House to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/20\/socialism-medicare-for-all-florida-latinos-vote-republican\/\">unpopular progressive policies<\/a> that mobilized swing constituencies in competitive districts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe almost lost races we shouldn\u2019t have lost. Defund the police almost cost me my race because of an attack ad. Don\u2019t ever say socialism ever again,\u201d Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger, whose district extends rural and exurban Virginia to Richmond, the state capital, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/05\/2022-house-democrats-concerns-pelosi-caucus-call-election-abigail-spanberger\/\">reportedly said<\/a> in November. \u201cIf we run this race again we will get fucking torn apart again in 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some progressives already holding citywide offices have faced pushback as well, especially in cities facing rising crime. Progressive district attorneys in both San Francisco and Los Angeles are facing recall efforts, joined by none other than California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, whom over a dozen Republicans are <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/18\/california-recall-backers-2-million-signatures-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vying to unseat<\/a> despite the state being one of the most liberal in the country. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/23\/people-are-scared-shoplifting-worse-san-francisco-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018People Are Scared\u2019: Shoplifting Is Plaguing Residents, Stores In San Francisco)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>California voters last November also <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/04\/california-proposition-16-failed-election-day-vote-affirmative-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rejected<\/a> an effort to reinstate affirmative action, shooting down Proposition 16 by over 10 points as it voted for Biden by nearly 30. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman all ousted high-profile, veteran moderates in 2018 and 2020. In May, Philadelphia\u2019s progressive district attorney, Larry Krasner, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/19\/surge-violent-crime-progressives-win-big-philadelphia-pittsburgh\/\">cruised to all but certain reelection<\/a> after beating his police-backed challenger, while across the state in Pittsburgh progressive state Rep. Ed Gainey ousted Bill Peduto, the city\u2019s incumbent Democratic mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Late last month, self-described socialist India Walton <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/23\/socialist-on-track-buffalo-mayor-defeating-democratic-incumbent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ousted incumbent Mayor Byron Brown<\/a>, though Brown did not help himself by continuously discounting her campaign and <a href=\"https:\/\/buffalonews.com\/opinion\/columnists\/analysis-the-mayoral-debate-that-wont-be\/article_4a92c262-c48d-11eb-9c90-cb22141204ab.html\">refusing<\/a> to debate her in the weeks before the election.<\/p>\n<p>Adams ultimately credited his win in America\u2019s largest city not to his refusal to adopt sweeping points like \u201cdefund the police\u201d or \u201cMedicare-for-All,\u201d but to his on-the-ground, kitchen table campaign that ultimately secured votes from progressives, moderates and conservatives alike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial media does not pick a candidate,\u201d Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bmxq6oGxgdw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> after the election kicked off on June 22. \u201cPeople on social security pick a candidate.
