Just $1.5 billion of the $46 billion allotted to the Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) program since December has been doled out to 350,000 U.S. households, according to McHenry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that the Treasury Department has been ineffective with respect to administering the $46 billion ERA programs is our Committee\u2019s most pressing concern,\u201d McHenry wrote in the letter. \u201cYet for reasons that remain unexplained, the Secretary is not scheduled to appear before the Committee in July.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The federal ERA program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/sites\/dfiles\/PIH\/documents\/ERAP_PIH_ERAP_FAQs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">provides<\/a> low-income families with financial assistance for rent payments. (Mandel Ngan\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The top financial service Republican noted that the bipartisan Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/116\/bills\/hr748\/BILLS-116hr748enr.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">requires<\/a> the secretary to testify before the committee once every three months. Yellen\u2019s most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy0074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appearance<\/a> before the committee was in March.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, McHenry said Yellen must testify since the federal eviction moratorium is set to expire at the end of the month, which could potentially lead to mass evictions of low-income families who were supposed to receive ERA funds. In June, President Joe Biden\u2019s administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/more\/pdf\/CDC_Eviction_Extension_Order_Final_06242021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extended<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/29\/justice-kavanaugh-supreme-court-realtors-eviction-moratorium-cdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">moratorium<\/a> until July 31.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe imminent expiration of the federal eviction moratorium, shifting ERA program guidance, and varying levels of effectiveness at the grantee level\u2014have created an atmosphere of uncertainty for renters counting on the relief Congress appropriated late last year,\u201d his letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>McHenry asked Waters to invite Yellen to testify at a July 20 hearing in which Housing Secretary Marcia Fudge is slated to appear.<\/p>\n<p>Waters\u2019 office didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
